Re: Portal Leaking

Also, you might as well do all the wheels - my experience was that if one go all goes... may be worth while to replace the bearings while you in there...

Weird ignition system?

I am systematically upgrading my 1972 710M. Currently, I am busy with the ignition system (12V civilian conversion tapped from one battery), but I was hoping that somebody could identify this system more accurately and maybe comment on the suitability relative to a 24V Pertronix kit from EI. Whould ...

Thanks guys, so I have nothing to moan about and that further fine tuning is simply not worth it. The reason why I asked was that SDP argue something like 7km/l (14.2l/100km) - I guess that is under optimum circumstances (level surface, hard tyres, no load etc)

Acceptable fuel consumption?

I regard this as a “seasoned” topic, so I’ll keep it very short. History: - Cleaned + installed service kits in both carbs - Replaced all cut-off valves ($$$) - Installed petrol pump service kit - Renewed all fuel lines - Replaced all filters - Adjusted valves - Confirmed timing - CO = 2.5% - HC = 1...

Just to let the forum know that the above-mentioned chirping has dissapeard after our recent holiday trip (8113km through Namibia and Botswana). I think it was just a matter of "settling-in" of new clutch components.

I replaced the old stock Maloya's (7.5-16) with BFG Mud-terrain T/A KM2 , size 235/85R16. Watch out for going too broad it will cost you in terms of fuel consumption...

After several tanks of petrol I can truly say that the fault has been rectified. Just more proof that a loose/poor earth connection can give you al sorts of funny readings.

Original Steyr-Puch parts are of an exeptional high quality, always keep it real... stay away from seemingly cheap VW replacements, they are not the same quality!

I would have (if I had the choice!), but those products are not available in South Africa. I am limited to the "mainstream brands" such as Castrol, Shell, BP... the previous owner used CASTROL EP75W90, SAE75W90, API GL4 in the gearbox and CASTROL EPX SAE80W90, API GL5 in everything else. T...

Castrol GTX diesel engine oil for the gearbox?

My local VW agent advised me to use ordinary Castrol GTX 15W40 mineral engine oil for my gearbox. It does not contain active sulphur and has the same viscosity of SAE75W90 (API GL4) gear oil.

Leaking portal axle seal/gasket?

My front right portal axle started to leak axle oil during a trip last weekend (see pic). Any suggestions?

Thanks guys, I have done the earth conversion. For the first time the gauge actually show "full" when the tank is full! I will have to wait and see how it goes as the fuel level drops.

Faulty fuel gauge?

When the fuel gauge of my 710 indicates "Reserve" there is approximately 35 liters of fuel left in tank. Is this normal?
