Re: A Quick Introduction

Welcome! First gear is for steep inclines only, or for going very slow. You can easily start rolling in second gear. No asbestos in the wind tunnel. What you have there is a thin foam-type material that breaks up to clog your air filter and cooling fins. Remove it. It was placed there to minimize no...

Re: 24v DC to AC converter - actual user input wanted

I have a Tripp-Lite PV2400FC inverter with extra batteries. It converts 24v DC to 110v AC and works flawlessly and can power many things. A battery integrator takes care of the battery charging. It's big and heavy, but I have a K, and there are smaller ones, depending on your needs. I can even power...

Re: Dogs in a Pinz Question

I have a K. The problem I see is in case of an accident there are a lot of places to bump around, especially with all the radios in back, so I travel very slow when my dogs are with me. There are harnesses that can hold them back with the rear seat belts, but I don't have any yet. My dachshund once ...

Re: Replacement side mirrors

Those look really nice. They are definitely tougher than the original ones, which were designed (I think) so that they could easily be turned in in order to be able to swing the door open all the way forward.

Re: Roof rack opinions

I agree that the color of the material is almost irrelevant; the cooling would be substantial anyway. The rack has the added convenience of its use as an observation platform. I'd also be concerned with topheaviness, and would use it to carry light, bulky stuff. I hava a K and don't like the high ce...

Re: WTB Original working Speedometer

I repaired mine, and I have few mechanical skills. Just follow the instructions on a post here somewhere. The alternative is expensive. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-100-km-h-Motometer-SPEEDOMETER-GAUGE-Military-Pinzgauer-MERCEDES-UNIMOG-404S-/141463810584?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&ha...

Re: Looks like you can now buy a US Mil. Hummer!

There are a few here in Costa Rica. Besides the enormous width, which makes them impractical, they are severely underpowered for the mud due to their tremendous weight. I guess they were designed for the desert.

Thank you Buzz. I totally agree that you should use your tools. I'll be extra careful with the gluing of my boots to avoid water getting in.

Re: Axle assembly

Congrats on your tool box. I should have gotten a set when they were available but were unwilling to pay $660 for it at the time. I thought the split boots were better. I didn't tear the original boots off; they got brittle and cracked. The split boots look less inclined to do that, but time will te...

The designers were on a joint LSD trip while watching Mad Max. No other explanation comes to mind.

OK, Mr. Stekay. Actually my mechanic makes them from parts of an old german printing press, and he says he's never seen bronze (yes, please excuse me) as hard as this.

Re: Wiper Motor Death!

Ok, so my new mechanic, who lives way on the other side of town and specializes on old VWs, made a new bushing out of very good german brass, and the wiper motor now works like new, fast and smooth. $110 was the bill.
