Re: Pesky brake springs

All back together again! Used a loop of piano wire that could take the tension and abrasion without breaking. Installed the lower spring first which gave me enough room to grab the free end of the upper spring. Now I just have to make a note to myself for future reference. Thanks to those who...

Re: Pesky brake springs

I appreciate the advice of a brake drum tool kit however the springs on the Haflinger brakes differ from those on the Pinz....
Had to take a break :D from my efforts but will be back at it in due course. Maybe piano wire...

Re: Pesky brake springs

Hey John, thanks for that. I have tried both ways even though the shop manual says to attach to the backing plate first. The space to insert a screwdriver or needle nose is very limited. The front shoe spring attached just fine using a wire loop but there are two springs on that rear shoe, the top o...

Pesky brake springs

It's been at least 15 years since I had to work on the rear brake cylinders so have forgotten how I did things then. Like fitting those little brake shoe springs back into place! I got everything assembled according to shop manual including the spring on the front shoe but those two springs on the r...

Re: Loss of power/Stumbling....

Checked wiring at the starter as suggested...all tight. The good news is, I took it out for a quick run lately and the symptoms seem to have have disappeared. Wondering if it could have been a stuck float needle. Does that happen often? The truck doesn't get a lot of running.

Re: Loss of power/Stumbling....

Thanks for the head's up. Fuel supply is good, filter full & flowing ok. Starts & idles fine but runs very poorly under any kind of load. How hot should the coil get during normal operation & do the Flamethrowers have a good reputation? Haven't done anything to the engine lately except i...

Re: Loss of power/Stumbling....

I am having similar issues. My civ. ignition was newly installed 2 months ago but the stumbling just began recently.
What is the best way to check the spark at the coil?

Re: Starter mount...which way is up?

Thanks for the note Ron. I am guessing that the reason the longer end (with the lip) is down is for additional support of the weight of the starter. Makes sense. As to the solid mount, I wonder what the experience is for those who purchased them. Comments anyone?

Starter mount...which way is up?

Doing a starter mount replacement after mine tore up. The mount is not exactly symmetrical, having one end a bit longer than the other. The manual appears to show the longer end down but I have seen some pics on this forum with it up. My old one had the longer end down when I removed it. Which way i...

Re: Strange symptoms

Thanks for the feedback folks. Turns out it was a combination of issues. The fan (which I also had running) decided to short out which probably led to the idling problem (thanks for that tip). The starter issue turned out to be the rubber mount letting go around the same time. New one on order. Can ...

Strange symptoms

Looking for advice. I was driving home the other day in the rain when it began: faint electrical smell in the cab followed by the wipers tripping out. Reset wipers but kept tripping. Then noticed the engine wouldn't idle & had to keep the revs up or it would die. By the time I got home I had had...

Re: Haflinger Rear Axle

The parts manual is a bit confusing when looking at the picture, but if you check the "required no." for the bushings (stones) you will see that it (the truck) requires 8 - i.e. 4 per axle.

Re: Steering - Thrust washer

Dan,
Pretty sure the rubber comes attached to the rings. It's been a few years since I've done that job, but I do recall that the thrust rings had rubber on them.
Cheers,
Sandy

Re: Getting the most from the brake system of the Haflinger.

Mike,
We may as well mention the brake hoses while we are at it. Over time these hoses will swell internally and restrict braking effectiveness.
It is an easy and relatively cheap fix.

Sandy
