My front differential was stripped down and the following reported:
One of the pinion bearings has seized, and the inner gear has seized to the shaft and picked up. Also all the seals were leaking oil, so needs a set of seals.
Repair is underway.

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway
I drained the oil from the front diff and this is what I found. Very fine steel filings, and some larger pieces of gold coloured filings. Is this normal wear? Only about 1 litre of oil drained out, but at least 2 litres went in on refill. There were black streaks through the old oil, fine iron filin...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway
Thanks Jimmy. Would that be a full diff replacement or just part? Looks like I will have to get it to a shop and get the diff taken apart. I'll have a look through the drain hole ss you suggested and see what I can see. I think the oil may have leaked although I never saw any oil on the ground, but ...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway
I removed the slave cylinder that locks the front diff, I could see the springs and everything looked OK as far as I could tell. I remounted it and drove the truck forward and backwards and was able to engage and disengage the front diff. That is, I flipped the lever and I felt the diff lock engage ...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway
Could anyone guide me on how to troubleshoot the front diff lock actuation? Is there a way to manually disengage the front diff lock?

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway
I jacked up the front axle and rotated one wheel and the other rotates with it, they are locked together. I activated the front diff lock and there was no change. I took it off again and still no change, the two wheels are locked together in rotation. The steering was fine, I did a full lock in both...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway
What do you mean by "seemed to lock up" exactly? Did the tires lock and leave rubber on the road? Did the steering wheel violently turn itself? The steering wheel did turn itself violently. And the Pinz lunged forward. I didn't look for rubber on the road, but it wouldn't surprise me it I...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway
Two scenarios come to mind: 1) the emergency brake was dragging enough to heat and engage more fully, creating the "lock up" condition. But since this is on the main drive shaft it should have affected both sides relatively equally, although locking the rear axle at speed will make the ve...

Scary lock-up on motorway
I was travelling on the motorway at 90 kmph in my Pinzgauer when suddenly the drive train seemed to lock up and I swerved into the fast lane missing a car by inches. Cars behind were also lucky to avoid an impact. It was scary! Thankfully, I managed to get her over to the hard shoulder. At first she...

Tyres/tires BF Goodrich v Bridgestone
I have a choice of buying Bridgestone Dueler Mud Terrain 673 v. BFGoodrich Mud Terrain for my 710M. The Bridgestone are a bit cheaper, and claim to be quieter on the highway. Any opinion? Goodrich have the better name, but I'd like the Bridgestone if it's true about the lower noise.
