Hydraulic pump for power steering
OK, this one's kind of odd, but on the C306 Fire Rescue truck I was considering to purchase, it had a hydraulic pump run off the PTO. So, there IS a hydraulic pump that was installed, just NOT for power steering. My question has been, if I removed it from the PTO and attached it to the engine, could...

MSC
I am confident that those of you who have your own shop are probably aware of this company. The company name is MSC Industrial Supply Co. IF you have a home shop, these guys have just about everything. Notice I said " JUST ABOUT ". For example, THEY DON'T CARRY Snap-on. And probably a few ...

Engines LAST LONGER if they don't suffer from extreme torture (high rpms or lack of proper oiling) and are properly maintained. As I am sure you are aware the Volvo six cylinder uses 9:1 compression ratio. By flowing the heads and replacing the cam with the automotive one, I am CONFIDENT that while ...

No offense taken Juergen. But I've been there, done that. This vehicle was used by the Swedish Fire Department. I am confident that it probably NEVER did any serious off roading. Did they make use of the ability to carry weight into places no other vehicle could have gone? Probably so. Will I make u...

Has anyone ever flowed the heads?
Just got back from driving the C306 Fire Rescue truck. All I can say is WOW! Ok, it's no speed demon. FOR NOW. But it's a stout six cylinder four speed that has tons of potential on many different levels. The engine ALONE is begging for many upgrades. Exhaust is but one. Air cleaner and intake manif...

I was just reading the specs ...
I was looking on Vinces site about the specs. One thing concerns me. The specs say 97 octane for fuel. Now I realize that these manuals were written long before the EPA took a strangle hold on our fuel supply, to say nothing of the Saudis, BUT 97 OCTANE? And that was when we could still get LEADED, ...

I SECOND THAT THANK YOU. TO ALL OF YOU. Especially Vince for giving us a place to hang out. Having said that, there is a guy here in Denver who does NOTHING but steering stuff. Mainly power steering but he does work on manual steering occaisionally. If I get the C306 I have my eye on, I'll give him...

I kind of figured that the automobile O/D tranny would be a problem. However, could the guts be used in the C300 series case? You guys are the greatest. Sharing all this knowledge and being so nice to all us newbies. THANKS TO EVERYONE. I will let you folks know IF I get the green light from my wife...

LP, THANKS very much. I was glad to see that info. Now for the BIG question. Will the M410 fit in a C303 or a C306? Thanks again. Your tech knowledge is VERY helpful. I've been wrenching on my rides for thirty years (has it really been that long - man I'm gettin old) and have stopped working on V8's...

Vince, I was looking recently at an F350 one ton dually front wheels. I SWEAR they looked exactly like the ones from the 303. So I have measured the spacing between wheel lugs (3 1/4 in) and the distance from one side of the wheel to the other (9 in). I will go out soon and start measuring one ton d...

LP, For the engine we used .040 over pistons for the c303 and the car cam for compatibility with the fuel injection... Also the exhaust is fun as you must use the car exhaust manifold and then rehash the vehicle to mate up. (the flange is different). Uh, did you use the heads also from the auto? If ...

OK. I KNOW what the gear ratio's are in the portal axles. I KNOW what the gear ratio's are for the C303 & C306 four speed tranny are. WHAT I DON'T KNOW is the tranny gear ratio's are from the four speed out of the 164 automobile OR what the gear ratio's are from the three speed (?) automatic are...

LP, Acorrding to my research, the 164 auto had either 8.5:1 or 8.25:1 compression, while the C303 (or 306) has a 9.5:1 compression. SO, if you add the cam and fuel injection to the 303 engine, you should see about 200 hp to the flywheel. And yes, having all that work DONE by someone else CAN get pri...

Me too!
I've been trying to decide on selling my 1991 Suburban, and buy either a 6x6 Pinz or a 6x6 Volvo. I have found a C306 Fire Rescue Volvo 6x6. I am leaning towards this one. There is an interesting item about this vehicle compared to a military version of this 6x6 - I think it would be a TGB 13. Aside...
