Coenraad I looked up a locl distributor of http://www.gebert-kg.de/ removing the lever was a task. I loosenened the 5 platform bolts on the rear end of my 712 and raised the platform until the retaing straps were fully stretched.. then I hammered a screwdriver into the slot of the lever, like a wedg...

My Pinz also suffered from a corrosion in the joint on the lever.
I took an angle grinder and cut off the pin with the ball on it, drilled a 5 mm hole and cut an M6 thread there.
Then I installed a stainless joint with a seal
no problems since

unipus you can easily verify the function of the fuel pump. on the driver side of the carbs you have the fuel hose coming from the pump. It is attached with a bolt with a 17 mm hex head. check your valve clearance and ignition timing.
sounds like you are backfiring through the carbs.
you can check it by opening the small lid in the "turtle" and placing a hand on top of the air intake there.
