Re: Converting Low Speed Transmission To Taller Gearing?
On the other hand, I've met owners that refused to run with rpms beyond maybe 3000 rpm because they didn't like the "sound" of the fan and engine (40-45mph tops). Not that it is bad to keep the revs down, but these engines (if well maintained) don't mind running close to the 4500 rpm redli...

Re: Converting Low Speed Transmission To Taller Gearing?
I assumed that there were two transmission variants. The factory service manual (p50) describes the top speed for the off-road transmission as 54 km/h. The "off road transmission" in the manual means that the transfer case is shifted into low range. It is not a separate or different unit,...

Re: Converting Low Speed Transmission To Taller Gearing?
There is only one transmission for the 712-710 "gassers"; a few of us have traded them for the overdrive Turbo Diesel 718-716 models (gains "6th" gear, loses 1st). But that won't gain you but 39% higher speeds (from 35mph up to 48mph). You either aren't getting the engine revs up...

Re: Converting Low Speed Transmission To Taller Gearing?
I am currently limited to ~35mph in 5th gear with 255/85 tires No, you are not. Your tires are 4.5% larger in diameter than the 265/75R16s that I run, so you should be able to go 4.5% faster... ULESS YOU ARE IN LOW RANGE! The transfer case lever is above the gas pedal on the side of the air tunnel;...

Re: Converting Low Speed Transmission To Taller Gearing?
How fast do you want to go to "keep up with traffic"? I can cruise at 60-65 all day (in warm temperatures, when the gearboxes get warmed up) in our stock 710M. But I'd prefer to be the slow traffic in the right hand lane to ensure there is plenty of gap between us and the traffic ahead of ...

Re: Gotta start somewhere, right?!?
I initially had a Cherokee (not as built up as that one) that served me well, but mine had only the 4 banger which may have been the saving grace - too much power is often not beneficial, and this is what breaks things and teaches bad habits. Pinzgauers, on the other hand, have relatively tiny horse...

Re: How to use six wheels ?
I don't know which posts Dave was referring to, but in my 712W I start by engaging the front axle (for 6WD) as soon as off pavement roads could use extra traction, such as washboards, very loose dirt/gravel/sand, and steeper up and down hills (where in 6WD the front and rear axles are tied together,...

Re: Locker Switch Operation.
All the locker lights (as well as the rest of the dash lights) go through the blackout light positions on the light switch; and those spade or ring connectors get really brittle, and break right between the ring or spade and the wire crimp so they be extremely difficult to determine where a broken w...

Re: Front suspension bangs
With the original design of a bolt per limiting strap or shock, the weak point is the root of the threads which is significantly smaller in diameter than the main body of the bolt. The design puts the greatest stress exactly where the root of the threads has to be located. With the improvement of dr...

Re: B pillar soft top connection
I don't have the exact configuration, but there are only two that are used on top that are used to tie the rolled up front canvas with. This will be in line with the rubber straps and hooks that are under the rollbar, almost overhead of the driver and passenger.

Re: B pillar soft top connection
The D rings go under the front top, the rings face the rear and are what hooks the front of the rear top under the front top flap. There should also be two D rings on the top of the front canvas, about over the edge of the head padding, and face forwards. These are used with the rubber bungies that ...

Re: Basic Stock Brake Performance Question
From my house elevation to ANYWHERE else is a 3,000 foot to 5,000 foot descent. With the Pinz's wind and drivetrain drag, going down to 4th (maybe 3rd if heavily loaded) means almost no brakes are needed, so the descent is a non-issue. I do not recommend staying in 5th and using the brakes for a lon...

Re: Rak 15 wiring help
My 712W has the same two pin socket behind the passenger seat; the mating plug powered the radio gear and lights in the box (and all this had circuit breakers in the box, in a separate power panel). The power socket goes directly to the battery without an obvious fuse, but it may have fuse-able link...

Re: Cold Weather EFI Issues
...someone is going to tell me im nuts for sure. Well, not NUTS, but ? LOL. Frankly, I've found that with my map (not handy to share at this moment) that the low vacuum (pedal to the metal) end of the fuel map is fairly flat across the rpm range (where yours is quite peaked at lower rpms); this giv...

Re: Cold Weather EFI Issues
In the tuning section, there is a tab for "Air Temp Compensation". I don't remember what mine is set for (I'd have to go fire up the truck computer to see) but IIRC I needed to significantly (like by increases of ten or more for each block) up those fields at the freezing level and below. ...
