rebuilding a transmission

Anyone done this? Is it worth the effort or will the tools & parts exceed the cost of buying replacement? I have a shop and a decent tool selection, but don't want 2 months of downtime only to spend more than a new unit.

Re: Transfer cased just popped out of Hi range into neutral

I'm all for a class... just like a cooking class. We all bring our transfer cases to a shop and sip wine while we are tutored by a pro to do the re-build. At the end of the day we go home with our re=built parts. We can skip the the Zen music ,flowers and tie dyed aprons, but that wouldn't hurt so m...

Re: Portal Leaking

Scott I caught the tool numbers of the pullers as OTC 7300 and OTC 1150 but missed the 3rd one. It has the same style as a steering wheel puller, but different OD. Can you let us know what you're using ? Having all the tools in place before starting is much nicer than looking for a tool Sunday after...

Re: buying a Pinz

there are 2 for sale in the classified section. one above and one below your budget.

Don't get too hung up on options and upgrades. As you own it you'll discover what is important to you and work it on it then. you should be able to find a nice clean rust free truck within your budget.

have fun

Re: L.E.D. Headlights installed today!!!!

Lighthouse here in Denver has them for $239/ea. They are 9-36V; no dicking around with V-drop resisters. My only problem is loose connections at the lighting relay.

Re: Carb sycronization kit/tool

Jerry, the sync tool is about $55 it's way cheaper than airfare. You can search here to find Dennis' technique for setting up the idle - the linkage length is a big part of getting it smooth. The other thing that will help make life easier is to re-build or at least check carbs gaskets and seals. Ji...

Re: Fuel Solenoids...

can you help us out with more info wrt the 12V version you have found? If we know the amperage of the unit a resister to provide the required voltage drop is about $0.50 and 20 minutes to install.

Re: Rebuilding or buying a rebuilt motor

almost forgot about part B of your question.

Cost is up to you since you have most of the guts torn out you can do any one of, or a combo of: pistons, cams, clutch, fuel pump, various gaskets/hoses, carbs or EFI.

Re: Rebuilding or buying a rebuilt motor

I bought Jim's 2.7L kit and cam. Did it in the garage over the winter. Jim was great at walking me through any obstacles. I think I used about 2 months; this includes some core shipping time and I only worked weekends due to a full time job. Some of the core downtime was well spent over hauling and ...
