SAV has a top end kit for around $1650 last time I looked, I highly recomend this set-up as it includes cylinders

There are a few things that can cause backfiring through the carb, Most obvious would be water in the distributer cap or on points(dry and wipe down with WD-40). Also check the timing, low float level in carb(lean pop), broken vac lines causing a vac leak. Could also be a tight or burnt intake valve...
