Re: We’re back baby!

Hey Vince, can you give a quick response to some of the "new" things that I see, like the post icons (some look like flames, some like a floppy and/or piston [depending on your perspective]), etc.? I see a small orange star with some, too... what is new here, and what does it mean? But its...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway

Well, you have to pull the diff out to both evaluate it and replace what is needed. Execution II improved the bevel gears shaft bearing area and improved lubrication, compared to Exec I. As long as no really big metal pieces damaged any other parts (like be getting wedged in between the pinion and r...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway

The only odd thing is that when I jacked up the front axle and turned one wheel the other wheel still turns in sync with it as though it was locked. But when driving the wheel are obviously not locked because I can steer easily. Strange?? I'm sorry to suggest that the bevel gears in the diff may be...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway

Is there a way to manually disengage the front diff lock? Remove the locker slave cylinder and manually move the locker mechanism (assuming it is free to move). You should be able to lock it with pressure, a spring should return it to the unlocked position - the slave only activates the "lock&...

Re: Spark plug question

It is never a good idea for any ignition coil to be operated without the proper plug gap; any coil can be damaged due to the much higher than expected voltage without the plug gap to limit the voltage. Fortunately, most coils are relatively robust and are not easily destroyed if you pull the coil le...

Re: Here we go again

Optima Red Top batteries were designed specifically as starting batteries, not as deep cycle batteries. Often the differences are subtle, and can sometimes be used to some extent for the other application, but generally are best suited and last longest when used as intended. The Solargizer can be of...

What does the Starship Enterprise and a roll of toilet paper have in common?

Both circle Uranus, capturing Klingons.

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway

The front diff lock mechanism is much, much easier to check than a failed diff! But it won't hurt to drain the front diff and look for metal pieces, too; that is also not difficult. One or the other should tell you what happened.

Re: Here we go again

do I need to replace the battery in question or check it monthly. Batteries, by definition are intended to store energy and then release it later; when this happens, the have less energy until properly recharged. You won't know if the battery is OK or needing replacement until you determine if it d...

Re: Engine vibrations..

Two things come to mind: 1. The driveshaft to the front axle is out of balance. The front end of the driveshaft is attached to the front diff, 4x4 is engaged by connecting the rear end of the shaft to the transfer case. This end has a pin that spins in a bushing so that if you are spinning the rear ...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway

To me, this suggests the front differential locker is an issue, same as others have suggested. But it seems like an unlikely way to fail. Unless the diff "just failed" due to insufficient lubrication. Have you checked the fluid levels in the diffs? If they are low, drain them and inspect ...

Re: Scary lock-up on motorway

suddenly the drive train seemed to lock up and I swerved into the fast lane Did the "lock up" make the truck swerve a lot, or just a bit? Two scenarios come to mind: 1) the emergency brake was dragging enough to heat and engage more fully, creating the "lock up" condition. But s...

Re: Converting Low Speed Transmission To Taller Gearing?

The Volvo and Iveco transmissions have exactly the same high gear (5th) ratio of 1.00:1 (input shaft directly connected to output shaft) so they won't get you going any faster than the stock transmission (and it looks like that's what you have from the photos). Ron's test will check the transfer cas...

Re: Converting Low Speed Transmission To Taller Gearing?

Again, just to check: you said your truck runs fine through all the gears - all FIVE gears? if the shift linkage gets far enough out of wack, you might not be getting fourth and fifth if the shifter is hitting the air tunnel and preventing its motion to the far right... just on the off chance that y...
