I bet they are filled with dirt, one on each side of tube.
The through bolts for the bars have tapered collets. the bars come off without separating the drive line. remove the lower shock bolt first.

Re: How do I remove rear drag links?
After removing the nuts, find the 2 threaded holes in the steel flange side. Thread in a 8x1.25 bolt to slit units apart. Use a new gasket going back together and do not loose the wave shim or coupling.

This has been done before, and it works fine as long as there is enough movement. If I recall, a 960 or 980 joint was used.

You will most likely find it sheared before the "paddle" on the inboard end.(most common axle failure point)

Broken axle or spider gear in diff.
Put it in gear, raise it up lock the diff. The wheel that spins has the fault(most likely a sheared axle shaft).

No special tools to remove the piston. Just remove the retainer and slide the pin out, you will have to remove the #1 piston to remove the bad #2 piston. If the pin is stuck, use a nut and long bolt through the pin and pull it out.

Re: rebuilding a transmission
New unit, Ha, Ha,(finding 1) that makes me laugh :P Usually cheaper to fix if you don't run it dry  The parts you pray are good are #1 Case,#2 main shaft, #3 cluster shaft(5th,4th, and 3rd driven gears are press fit @200deg F). Basic ZF trans, it's not so much the tools but there is a learning...
