Sitting 4+ years, checklist for resurrection...

Starter sounding a bit more like a possibility, given the PO's comments.
A stuck pinion gear, possibly a bad wedged solenoid.

Again most Alternator/Starter rebuild shops can handle this starter.
It's a 24V Bosch, it's a pretty common housing, bushings, and pinion,
with the exception of the solenoid, and Stator winding for 24V.

I did replace mine with a new EI "gear reduced" starter,

new Solenoids, and some of the Starter parts are available at EI and SAV.

I did get my old starter rebuilt as a spare at a local shop in San Jose.

What about the starter listed in that “compatible parts” list floating around, the Bosch unit. It says confirmed fits. Is that legit?

Dono, haven't seen a compatible parts list other than the one
on Jim's Goatwerks Website -- and a starter is not listed. If
you can find this other list it would good to share.

I may be misinterpreting what’s on the list. It’s the one on mad scientist hut.com or some such. It’s well known here, I’m sure I’m just mislabeling where/who it’s from.

Thanks for the reminder about the SDP site. It’s a good
source of “how to’s”. Though I don’t see a starter ref there
looks like a part for the starter.

Well after a longish winter break (due to work), I was finally able to start back on the Pinz.

Removed the starter. The armature does not appear to be locked in the engaged position. Still can't get a 2 foot breaker bar to turn the motor over. Not looking good. I only had time to pull one spark plug last night, will do the others soon. Just stumped on how it made a few sluggish revolutions with the starter, but can get anything by hand?

Is there anything in the driveline that could be engaged? I'm not well-versed in the operation of all the Pinz mechanicals. This thing rolled freely off my trailer into the barn.

Well - great news. I just tried your suggestion with good results.

I exercised the clutch pedal a number of times, then wedged a block in there. I was able to go from a non-budging crank bolt to turning with one hand. It’s not super easy, but a LOT better than before.

Thoughts on what the story is behind that?

Well that's interesting, hmmm, well maybe it's not in neutral.
Linkage problem or something jimmied up the shift tower on the
tranie. Put your X-case in neutral and see if you can then turn
the crank by hand again but now with the clutch engaged. If
you can't then the tranny is stuck in gear but you now have isolated
the problem to the tranny eliminating the X-case forward.

I am assuming the problem persists with the X-case in neutral,
at this point I would take a hard look at the shift linkage. Remove
the tranny cover plate on the bed of the truck and make sure the
short linkage arm has not come loose, it creates a pivot point so
that the forks move proper inside the shift tower on the top of the
tranny. It anchors to the top of the shift tower with a snap in place
bearing. If that came off it may have hung up the innards -- do no
just thinking. In any case that would be the place to look to see if
there's something amiss with shifting.

If that looks fine you could try turning the clock backwards, counterclockwise
on the crank and see if something gives -- even for a fraction of a revolution
then hangs up again, that may indicate something broken inside the tranny.
I'm more suspicious the engagement of gears is the issue.

Thank you! I will work through your suggestions and report back. Still working on limited time with this little truck, but excited to get it going. My little boys are all over me to get it on the road.

It looks like fragments of a zip tie? Or are these metal bits. Still does the tranny seem frozen. Maybe the junk in the pan is not a sign of a handgernad going off

Definitely chunks of metal. I played around with the linkage a little bit and don’t think anything is malfunctioning there.


Going to have to drop the pan next and see if I can get more of the story.
