You set to the belt to the factory recommended torque and the alternator shaft threads stripped? Can you confirm the torque that you used?

Thank you.

67 N•m.
I'm thinking the threads were likely damaged when I acquired the truck. All good now with a new armature shaft & retaining nut (and a bit of blue loctite)

Wow 67 nm is just under 50ftlbs. I am looking at the torque specs in the Service Manual annex and it says 6.7 nm which is about 5 ft lbs.

I am not giving you a hard time and I think you may have miss-typed. I recently did a belt change and that just felt too loose to me. My inclination was to keep tightening! Thats why your post caught my eye.

Well the happy news is you got a chance to rebuild your alternator. I have been wanting to renew bearings and brushes on mine for a while.

Have you had a chance to take her out for a test drive?

john

According to my Appendix, 67 Nm is correct for the fan bolt:

Paul - Thanks for the correction - I was in the wrong column.

I was thinking about this and we were really lucky in this case that pulley or the belt didn't go back into the fan. Might have been ugly.

From what I've heard about fans exploding at speed its nothing I would want to be around.

I will be re-checking mine!

Yes fortunately my fan wasn't damaged -- they aren't cheap!
The alternator was easy to rebuild -- I didn't have any electrical or charging issues so I just replaced the brush set and armature with new from SAV.
The bearings were replaced with new SKF 6201 2RSH JEM and a 6303 2RSH JEM.
I've put a good bit of miles on it since last weekend -- all systems nominal!
