Carbon fouling my carbs?

When I was swapping my main jets last summer, I noticed that the internals of my carbs were dark and sooty. I'm pretty sure that a carb in good condition should be clean and shiny since it should only deal with air and fuel.
Is this a symptom of bad piston rings?

Any backfiring when starting or under any driving conditions?
Do you see any carbon deposits in the Air Intake hood Group # 1-35-15?
See anything in there might backfiring on you at times, if you do
might be a rich or bit too far advanced.

I was thinking timing as well.
What about a weak intake valve spring or possibly wearing valve seats...

They all get dirty. Very normal, the crank case vents into the air box, the more blow by, the faster the sooty build up.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Could it also have anything to do with 10% ethanol in my gas? A friend of mine said that his snowmobile did that when he started using ethanol gas.
