For the past several months, I've had a slight ticking coming from the front cylinder when hot. It sounds like the typical rocker chatter from the engine, but just a *hair* louder from the front cylinder. As I rev the engine, it becomes slightly more pronounced. If I hold a screwdriver to my ear, it is noticeably louder on cyl 1 valvecover. Just a light metallic tap, but loud. I adjusted the valves on all cylinders, but did cyl 1 a hair tight to see if it made a difference and it did not. Rocker shafts had no slop. What should I be checking next?

Worth trying a compression test, any significant difference between #1 and the other jugs might
imply a ring problem. Also get an endoscope down the bore and inspect the cylinder walls.
Other than that your kind'a left with exploratory surgery or monitoring the situation to see if it
progresses.

Crap I totally forgot I have an endoscope! I guess it's a good time to swap plugs. I typically use the starter for compression tests. Any reason on this engine that I shouldn't?

Yup, crank the engine with the starter. Just 2 or 3 rev's for a peak reading.
Again this won't be definitive but might lead to a clue. Oh, and I never tried
this before, but you could put a mirror on the endoscope head and look back
at the valves, when open a peak at the valve seats -- just for yuks. Don't
expect you will see anything but process of elimination.

Adjust the valve lash? Too loose?
