Starter grief

Post by karoja »

Mt starter is acting up, and am preparing for the worst. Is it the same starter as the Unimog 404?

Thanks,
Karl

Try checking your ground connections first, including the battery. If there is an intermittant connection or loose connection you could have problems like this. If your ground strap is hot you have found the problem.

No! A Unimog starter will destroy the ring gear
Just fix or replace it.
Specifically what is it NOT DOING.
Is it spinning without engaging?
Is it dragging?
Is it clicking and not spinning?
Always start with verifying the ground switch and battery connections.

The front and middle sintered bushes deteriorate over the years on the generally used starter motor design ... replace them either with new factory or "home-made" bushes and the starter is often as good as new.
The symptom is that the battery seems "weak" when it is actually fully charged.
Note a few other things can cause the above symptom but if the system is checked and all seems OK then the above may be the problem.
