Oil Thermostat Alternate

Post by Thomas-E »

I had troubles getting my engine to warm up, wrapped the whole lower crankcase and oil pan with aluminum bubble insulation.
Picked up about 15 degrees... now up to about 140 F.

This is so low that you may develop foamy oil, the engine doesn't get warm enough to cook out the combustion condensation that inevitably get into the crankcase.

A friend at work was restoring am old Porsche 911 and showed me a slight oil leak that he had, and I saw his thermostat. Wow  it looked just like the one on the pinz. He was kind enough to remove it and let me take it home to compare, physically identical! I did some research and the numbers from the manufacturer indicated the it was right in the temp range for the pinz.

So, to keep this short we found a good used one online ($35.00)
at one of the MANY online Porsche sources.

It works flawlessly, perfect fit. Now I can get my oil temp up to 175 F. with an outside air temp of 28 F.

I installed it in last March of this year and have run it all summer,
185-190 F. with an outside air temp of 100-110 F.

Tried using these numbers at both napa and porsche. Non of them pulled anything. The OEM# is not a valid porsche number.

Anyone have any luck. I even tried searching applications on the net.

Another post excavation :)

Yes, many parts of Pinzgauer are Porshe based, like fan or oil thermostat.

OIl thermostat is from BEHR brand.

Reference number (you can find them on ebay) are :
224 83 000 for 83°C (180° F) oil temp.
224 87 000 for 87°C (190° F) oil temp.

Check "behr 224 83 000" on ebay.
