I have put about 1000mi on my 712 since I got it 4 months ago, and have put in 4-5 quarts of oil over that period. I'm adding one quart for every 30 gallons of gas or so.
It doesn't smoke when running, and not a drip to be found under the engine. Really, none!
Jim L. did a compression test on it just prior to my possesion, it passed well (around 156-158 to my memory).
How much oil do these engines burn on average and when should I worry?
Thanks,
Ed

My 712W did that for YEARS (well, at least the first 5 that I had it) at about the same consumption - I put in a quart every other fillup. I went to replace the intake valve seals and there WASN'T ANY! But even after adding seals, the oil consumption never changed. It was not until Jim L. rebuilt it that it got less thirsty, probably something in the neighborhood of a quart every 2-3,000 miles.
Jim does good work!
On the other hand, my 710M doesn't need oil added between yearly oil changes, and it is a completely stock engine.

Castrol SAE 30!!!! for me as well. I'm surprised that different brand oils work differently. I thought they were all the same but not.
I picked up Wagner High Detergent SAE30 awhile back and it was burning quicker. Also I added Lucas oil additive one quart to 5 quarts at every oil change. Lucas made it run even smoother and cuts down oil consumption.
But then again, I'm a fanatic about keeping the Pinz in top condition.
