Rough running - think I've found the cause

Post by spandit »

Had problems with my engine misfiring/running rough since coming back from a weekend of mud-plugging. I've checked the leads, plugs etc.

Thought I'd start taking things apart today. Took the top cover off to look in the carbs but before I inspected them, found this:

For those of you unfamiliar with the engine bay, this is the rubber joint between the air filter and the air intake (01-35-15). Sure enough, there was some crab in the carbs. I've blown all the jets clear and blown a load of mud out of the float chamber and the engine seems to be running better. Think it might take a bit of a run to clear everything out but at least I'm making progress!

Wow: You must have been in some deep $h1t! Bummer that it made it into the carbs and possibly the engine. Was you air cleaner still intact or did it collapse? Regards, Kevin

Air cleaner looks OK but I'll give it a closer inspection in due course...

The obvious cause of this problem is, running your engine backwards and sucking mud into your submerged exhaust pipe, causing said mud to proceed through your engine and up to your air intake.

Could be, Ed, the exhaust was underwater for quite a while! Not a lot of movement to bump start the engine in either direction, mind... :D
