Backfire check list?

Post by audiocontr »

Would anyone be so kind to list what to check for consistent backfiring? It just started within the last few weeks after running the truck hard in the sand. It feels weak in power and pops about a second after letting off the gas

Exhaust leak? Whats the best way to find a leak if its not visible? rev and carefully line up hand?

Coil failure?

Condenser failure?

Much appreciated!

Exhaust leak? Redneck check - pop a leather work glove on and with the engine on idle, use your hand to seal off the tailpipe. If the exhaust is good or even reasonable it'll try to stall out, if you have a leak it'll keep running and you'll hear a farting sound which makes it easier to track down the leak. :wink:

Since you are replacing, it would be good to know which muffler you choose and why. Not stock I presume?

After checking with Scott/Jim (thanks both for advice) - finally i got 304 stainless version of Hushpower II Muffler put on.. the CM-35 was leaking previously & so Andre had welded the leak last year..

happy with the hushpower II performance.. gives a sense of better throttle response (on 712 any little helps)

- only problem is that on revving the pinz sounds like a ferrari :-(

{ hence noisier than the previous IMCO CM-35 }

PS. morris - chosen since 304 SS & 18" as opposed to CM-35 (16.5" ?)
