Engine Quits at low RPM

Post by John L »

Hope someone can give me a little help. I have a 710 M 1975. She's been running great until the other night. As I was running about 80kph she stated running a tad rough. Not bad, but enough to notice. As I pulled up to a stop sign and took my foot off the gas, she died. She restarted, but as soon as you let off the gas, she would die again. So, I drove at high rpm's until I got her home. At high rpm's she's a little rough, but not bad. The engine itself sounds fine. But, at idle (foot off the accelerator) she dies.

Here's what I've checked so far: air filter is clean. Fuel filter is clean. Carbs are clean. Plugs are in tact, slightly dirty, but cleaning didn't change a thing. I also ran all the plug wires and they seem fine.

Here's what I'm going to try this evening: clean the fuel pump strainer and check the fuel solenoids. Any other thoughts? I read one post with similar complaints and they referenced a potential loose carb. I'll check that as well. The kids are fussing at me that she's not operational. :)

Thanks for the help.

check the circuit breakers. Sounds like you lost power to the solenoids.

Dude you are a genius!!!!!! Yes the circuit breaker was tripped. But, everytime I reset it it tripped again. So, I individually pulled each solenoid wire out and retested it and got the same result. Soooo, what am I looking for now to remedy the problem?

If I read the schematic correctly this breaker also provides power to the blower motor and the wipers. You could have a short to ground on one of these circuits or just a bad breaker. May want to fill out your profile with a location.

Breaker #10 also powers the horn as well as what edzz said. May be a short there?

Alright guys, first, I want to thank everyone for the help. By pointing me in the right direction I have her purring like a kitten at the moment. Prior to the post about the breaker, I had tried to test the solenoids. But it seemed that all 4 were out; which was unlikely. So, I figured my test method was flawed. But, after the post about the breaker, it all made sense. No power to the solenoids so no clicking when you plug them in. Breaker #10 was tripped.

So I checked all of the wires to the solenoids all the way to the harness, and no problems. I then reviewed the wiring schematic and saw that one of the first things on that breaker is the black out light/head light switch. Just prior to my problem, I had turned it on to show my boys how it worked. I toggled the head light switch and it eliminted the short. So, I either had the switch at a "no man's land" position which was popping the breaker, or I may have a short in the switch. But, the problem has been diagnosed, and at least temporarily, solved.

Hopefully if anyone has a similar situation they will read this post and be able to short circuit (pun intended) their diagnosis of their problem.

Thanks again and I hope to be able to help you guys in the future.

John this is why we all share our pinz issues..almost all of us can say we have had an identical problem to another Pinz owner..some of us have to solve the issue with blood. sweat and tears...but then the next guy comes along with the same issue finds the post...cracks open a beer and repairs his issue with no kicking and screaming!...good times!!!

I had the exact same issue when I got my 710K back from the paint shop (no gloss, flat papyrus tan, love it!). I noticed a breaker had popped and pushed it in, but problem stayed (think there was a slow short somewhere).
Thought it was a carb problem. After reading this I jiggled the switches and presto, problem gone. Many thanks.
