Hard to start....

Post by waterdog »

Guys ,what could be the problem? My truck is sometimes hard to start, it takes about 5 or 6 seconds cranking and finally starts... If you shut it off and re-start it fires right up!! But if i let it sit for 1 hour or more, it takes too much cranking to start...whe is runnin, runs perfect... Cables, points.... Checked!! The only thing i havent check is timing, could that be??? Thanks for your comments....

Could be old fuel hoses. They dry out and crack at the ends, letting in air and draining gas back to the tank. If it takes longer to start the longer your truck has been sitting and you've never replaced the hoses, it might be time.

Might check fuel pump. The diaphram inside the pump gets old, don't hold pressure and allow the fuel to drain back to the tank. If truck has been sitting a while, it can take extended cranking to get fuel back to the carbs. That was the problem with mine, but rebuilding the pump solved that issue.

A rebuild kit is available and is relatively easy to do.
