Pully Bolt - Urgent

Post by berger »

Hey Guys.

Bit of an urgent request. After our trail ride, Mead had some issues with his truck. Long story short, the bolt that holds the crank pulley in is gone and the pulley backed out about 2 inches. Anyone know the size of the bolt?

Parts book says:
BOLT CRANKSHAFT PULLEY 7121021061/ 01-05-01
M20x1,5

The bolt appears to be special with a washer as part of the head. $40.35 for a new bolt ! Used is $19.50.

Lucky! Wow!

FYI, there's an o-ring that goes on the bolt before attaching the pulley. #9013783

How does the pulley go back on? We have the key and bolt but it isn't cooperating. We are freezing it to aid in pressing it in, and then plan on using an impact gun to reinstall the bolt. Are there any instructions out there on reinstalling the pulley?

Since the pulley goes around the shaft, you want to HEAT the pulley to expand it (and cool the crankshaft to shrink it, if possible, but not imperative). Bake the pulley at 300F for a half hour to an hour and use oven mitts to put it on the shaft.

It is also possible that the end of the shaft or bore of the pulley was damaged by running with the pulley almost off the shaft; check both carefully for any burrs or mushrooming. You can carefully file any high spots down. Check this first, then try heating the pulley.

Does the pulley end have a slight tapered end to it, or is the shaft uniform all the way? There seems to be a slight shoulder on the end of the pulley collar.

Thanks!

Very hard to apply proper torque with an impact gun, very easy to break something with an impact gun. Check the manual for proper torque and type of loc-tite if required.

It's alive!

Motel BBQ worked well as an oven...

Lightly tapped in, then wrenched on...no impact gun needed.

Not 100%, but running well enough to get Mead home.

Wow, what a weekend!! Thanks ever so much to all who offered advice and especially to Berger and TechMOGogy this weekend for their first hand help, I couldn't have done it without you guys!
Just so everyone knows also the truck ran beautifully all the way home and feels to be nearly perfectly timed for three guys in a parking lot somewhat guessing on how to fix this without a timing light or proper procedure check list! :D
