OMFG! This is not a paid endorsement, but OMFG !! Andre (Fat Fabrications) was in town yesterday and slammed this kit into my 78 710M. Absolutely transforms the truck. Smooth as silk, purrs like a kitten, easy on the ears, easy on the nose.... etc. etc. Insane transformation of the running performance of the truck.

Andre did the install last night, and this morning I put about 50 miles on it in extremely humid, changing to very very hot weather. Just fantastic. Bottom line, dig through the old sofa cushions and find all your loose change. Buy the PinzSSI. It's super sweet.

Just received my Pinzi SSI in the mail today and VERY anxious to get it installed. Awesome quick service too! I ordered it last weekend and it came in the mail this morning! WoooHooo!

I took my Pertronix off yesterday and installed the Pinzi SSI. Big difference and I noticed much smoother response and a LOT less stumbling. Now we are going to tune up the carbs and when my gaskets get here, adjust the valves. That should make a difference.
One comment is that the instructions for the SSI are crystal clear and the kit is supremely complete. It is a very fine kit and was easy to install with the pictorials. Thanks for a great product.

It's fun to be able to play around with the settings and see how performance changes. The default program is the best for overall usage.
The laptop is not connected while the engine is running.

Add me to the list. I received my PinzSSI kit last week, and am going to try and install it today. Wish me luck...

You guys have such clean trucks!

I must be doing something wrong. Literally, my Pinzgauer looks like an NHL locker room crashed into the Tour de France, and all the equipment landed in/on my 710m

Well, after two years thinking about it, I finally installed the SSI.

It is as described, fast shipping and easy install. Once dialed in, the truck started and ran like a top. Will be curious to see how it does off-road. Bonus, my engine looks super clean.

Also upgraded to a new 24v-12v converter and a pair of new yellow-tops. I am a happy truck owner...

hard to believe but coming in on two years since my install. Truck runs as good as the day I put the unit in. No longer do I have to avoid the water puddles that gave me so much grief in the past and the constant fiddling trying to keep the truck running perfect. Now it is more just keep the valves adjusted and the occasional check of the carbs to make sure they are still tight and in balance. Great unit that is just another step up from what was available in the past.

I recently found out that if one battery is going bad the Pinzgauer won't start. It will crank, although somewhat slower, but no spark. I checked the battery voltage while cranking the engine and it dropped below 18, which is below the threshold for the module to function. With a new battery installed it started and ran like new, instantly. The bad battery was a 5 year old Die Hard.
If you have the PinzSSI and one day it suddenly won't start, check the cranking voltage and you will probably find the problem with one of the batteries. Under no-load the voltage was 24, which is slightly low.
I have found that the Maxx battery, sold by WalMart, is a good one. Get number 27, it sells for about $110 with tax and core.

Is it safe to assume that the battery you replaced was the "lower" battery, with its negative terminal connecting to the battery switch lead and the positive terminal connecting to the other battery? If so, this is a perfect example of unbalanced batteries and why you should periodically charge each battery independently with a 12V charger.

Although imbalance can happen with only 24V loads (and no connection to the midpoint between the two batteries) this is very common when even a small 12V load is applied to the lower battery. The problem stems from the fact that when both batteries are in series the charging current has to be the same through both batteries (assuming no 12V loads). If, when running and the alternator is charging, one battery is at 13V and one battery is at 14V (for a common 27V sum) the 14V battery is on the verge of being overcharged, while the 13V battery is not quite up to charge. Power is the product of voltage times current; since the current must be the same in both batteries, the 14V battery gets more POWER than the 13V battery - this is the opposite of what we would like to see (the lower battery should get MORE power to get it up to fully charged!). The lower battery gets less and less charge until it is "dead"; the upper battery gets overcharged.

Now consider even a small 12V load: this is stealing CURRENT away from charging the lower battery; now it gets even less power when it really needs more to become fully charged. The difference in recharging becomes more and more drastic as time goes on. While this eventually result in either the upper battery failing from being continuously overcharged or the lower battery failing from being undercharged, failure happens much more quickly than it should. While it is best to have identical batteries (identical in capacity, voltage, size, manufacturer, and age) so they are both drained and charged evenly in a 24V only use, they will never be perfectly balanced. In this case, a yearly charge of each battery with a 12V charger will bring both back up to nearly identical charge levels and "reset" their differences to zero. But when they are of different age, brand, size, OR have a 12V load then they need to be "reset" much more often - perhaps as often as once a month. Without this care you will be spending much more on batteries than you should.

With a single 24V voltmeter measuring the total voltage of both batteries, during cranking you should expect to see more than 20V across both. This is a good indication that both batteries have enough charge to keep their voltages up during the high current cranking time. It is better still to have an independent voltmeter for each of the two 12V batteries; this way you can see if one has less voltage than the other - during both cranking, normal running, etc. A battery with a lower voltage is the clue to independently charge it, bringing it's voltage up to the same as the other battery. Batteries (and voltmeters) are never perfect, but if you see that one battery is always one or two tenths of a volt different than the other and it always stays this way then that is just the way your batteries/voltmeters are going to be - but if this difference starts to grow you can be certain that the battery charge difference is growing, too.

Thanks for this tip. Charging now to see if this helps. My Pinz wouldn't start even with the SSI, and a backfire set the K&N air filter on fire internally. Think I used too much starting fluid? Just got my new K&N and it is above zero so I can install it.

OK, I am about to throw in the towel and get the Pinzssi. I have spent a good part of a year intermittently troubleshooting the ignition system. (civilian and pertronix, blue coil, 4500 unit jumped,I think a good ground?, Carbs and fuel delivery are not a problem and just rebuilt by Jim L.) Can't say that I have really found any one thing specifically wrong. It just always seems to start running again after I do a few things; for a while. Often an every other day thing; for instance it started and ran great yesterday but would not start today. Often this is moist weather dependent and not really temperature. In fact it was starting at 1degree a couple weeks ago. Anyway, this is similar to many others as reported in other threads, (yes, I think I have read them all). My question, is there anything specific that the PinzSSI won't fix? Admittedly this may be too broad of a question but I want to assume ( yes I know what assume means) that the switch and start button are good and 24 v will get to the pinzssi. Hate to drop $700 and still have a problem.

Thanks to all and please be gentle.

Keith

Make sure both batteries are good and are load-tested. Verify alternator output. By-pass the RMP limiter, it could be going bad. The engine block should be securely grounded with a good connection to the negative battery terminal. All of this must work well for your ignition and PinzSSI to function correctly.

If you install PinzSSI and it doesn't not solve the running issues, return it for a full refund, no questions asked.
