Motor oil

Post by Brickren »

Hello. I'm sure it's been covered, but search didn't bring any results. A sticker on top of my engine says 30wt oil. The repair manual says 20w50. What does everyone use? I would also like to put in some Lucas stabilizer. What's anyone's opinion? I live near Erie,Pa.

I use 30 SAE year 'round. I suppose that a lighter weight might be better in the winter but I warm up the engine before the start of driving so it has not been an issue for me.

I use 30 wt no additives. I wouldn't feel bad about using 20-50 maybe when my stockpile of 30 wt runs out...

If your rich and want to find all the places a Pinzgauer can leak you could use synthetic oil.

I don't run in the winter, but both my aircooled vehicles get 20w-50.

What about rating? SE, SL? Does it matter? Non detergent I think would be best. Especiallyin an older engine.

Unless an engine has been running non detergent I wouldn't start using it. Would you switch to non detergent in your Ural?

The rating called for in the manual is "mil-l-2104b" oil.

Castrol 20W50, but it is warmer here. I have always used Castrol in all the cars I've owned.

I use Penrite 25W-70 ....good in our warmer climate.
Penrite is an Australian Company although I understand they sell worldwide.

15W-40 mineral oil works for me. I tried 10W-40 but found it to be too thin, making loads of smoke with a cold engine and getting through about 1 litre every 300 miles. Avoid synthetic oil.

I use 20W50 Phillips X/C aviation grade, mineral spirits.
Meets MIL-L-22851D spec. and great for air cooled engines.
Stay away from synthetics, as others have pointed out.

Castrol also has an aviation grade, but Coast OIl Co.
hasn't carried that recently.

Taking your advice I switched from 10w30 to 20w50 weight. The motor runs noticeably quieter with less valve train noise. Idle speed dropped until the oil warmed, then everything was normal. It will be interesting to watch as the temps drop in the next few months here in Idaho.
