Loose Starter

I was checking around the motor looking for a squeak and found that the starter has some side-to-side play. The top and bottom nuts were snug, but I loosened them and re-tightened them with no change. I looked through the manual to see if there should be shims but there was no mention and the pictures didn't help. It looked like the mounting studs were moving along with the starter.

Part number is 7121090062 and is available from EI and SAV.

You may also want to consider adding item # 7121090222 which was added by the factory as an upgrade to retain the starter in case the rubber mount fails. It also requires a couple of different bolts. Check the parts diagram for Group 09-01 item 8.1.

This is a fairly common failure and should be fixed asap to avoid damage to the starter or ring gear.

Thanks for the info. The noise started recently so hopefully the starter didn't get damaged.

Not an uncommon problem but not as bad as it use to be. Have seen a couple trucks which looked to have been serviced and for some reason the little metal brace/keeper was not reinstalled.
