4wd engagement

My truck tends to stay in 4WD after I flip the lever back up. Anybody want to tell me me about the system before I start exploratory surgery? Any parts or tools to have on hand? Also light never comes on for 4WD.

It’s not uncommon for the lockers in any of the witches hats to be “sluggish”
disengaging. Assuming yours eventually disengages. If it does “working” it
on and off as many times as you can should improve disengagement.

It's not a bad idea to flush out the 3 hydraulic lines every couple of years. The fluid may collect moisture and become thicker and jelly-like which will make engagement/disengagement sluggish.

When I first got my Pinz, two out of three slave cylinders were slow or 'not responding' basically due to limited use/maximum neglect. After dissecting them and flushing with fresh fluid everything is operational. Two bolts to remove the slave is all it takes to know if you need to dig deeper.

I try to make it a part of every drive to engage all three locks to keep things free and tested.

Yes, this happens. I make it a point to exercise the systems every winter when I have snow or slippage available. The first time I engage the front diff, when I release it it will not disengage for a long time. After that, it tends to get quicker. Like they said before, probably slightly clogged lines that just need to be flushed and exercised periodically.
