Shudder when shifting

Post by GadgetPhreak »

When I test drove my Pinzgauer in San Diego last week I noticed a shudder when shifting, especially in higher gears. To me it definitely felt like clutch slipping, however the owner (who was admittedly not very mechanical) said he thought it was the brakes (which doesn't make sense as I wasn't braking at the time).

I don't have manuals for it yet (will be ordering them from Scott at EI shortly) so I wanted to find out a couple of things from you guys:
1. How much adjustment is there in the clutch? The prev owner didn't think it had ever been adjusted.
2. Is there a link to somewhere that shows how to do the adjustment?
3. What's the latestt opinion, is getting an OEM clutch the best solution or is there a better aftermarket choice (keep in mind I'm running the 2.7L, FI, and perf cam, if that matters)

Thanks,
Ben

Clutch auto adjusts, no manual adjustment.
I would first check the engine mounts

Thanks Jim, when I went down to meet with David and test drive the 710M I was really hoping I'd have time to come up and meet you but the timing just didn't work out this trip.

I'll check engine mounts first.

If you decide to change a clutch, check Jim's site. It lists a PN for a heavier-duty BMW clutch that is better for the 2.7L.

Not likely an issue but also check out the Transmission mount,
it's at the output shaft of the transmission.

Later you may want to install Jim's anti-clanking damper on the
locating pin

Well after driving it for a few days I've determined it's definitely the clutch slipping. Also noticed that the master cylinder is seeping so I'll do a rebuild or replace both master and slave while I'm at it. I feel another Expedition Imports order coming ;)
