PInzgauer compatible u joints? The story gets WORSE !!
Hi all,
I'm replacing the u joints from the transmission to the transfer case. Just curious if there are any u joints that cross reference with the NOS ones (not Chinese crap, but US made)? I ordered a pair from a reputable dealer, but when they arrived, they were incorrect. I can get them changed out I'm sure, but I would love to get it done before the weekend if possible.
Just curious.....
thanks in advance.
Dave

Don't know the part number, but my local bearing supplier had them on the shelf when I wanted some.

Good to know. I'll bring my old one in to a good shop and see if they can match it up.Ian wrote:Don't know the part number, but my local bearing supplier had them on the shelf when I wanted some.

Re: PInzgauer compatible u joints?
Crazy question, can anyone tell me the outer circumference of the correct u joint 'caps'. The ones that currently don't fit are from SAV and I'm curious if I have some oddball drive shaft.......

Sorry, but I do not know the size of the caps.
One more crazy question: Did you contact SAV and ask what's up with them? Perhaps Willy can shed some light on things.

Not yet, as the u joints did not come directly from SAV, but Pinzgauer Canada. I spoke to Karl about them and he procured them from SAV. This is why I'm reluctant to simply return the units I have to Karl and buy from SAV directly. Just don't want to waste shipping twice.....undysworld wrote:Sorry, but I do not know the size of the caps.

Re: PInzgauer compatible u joints?
Measured the diameter of my current Ujoints. Cap is 31.30mm and u joint brand is Lobro. Definately European and not "off the shelf" compatible.

Re: PInzgauer compatible u joints?
Strongly considering having a drive shaft made up with my existing flanges and a common u joint. Details to follow.

Re: PInzgauer compatible u joints?
Interesting read. I think I will just go the simpler route this time around, as time is a factor. I figure I can probably have the flanges grafted onto a properly balanced shaft for reasonable money and never have to deal with the pricey u joints again. Might even be able to use the existing shaft and just have the yolks swapped, we will see. I have a great drive train company here in town and the owner does big business with my brother in law, so a deal should be had.....undysworld wrote:Or CV joints: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=9766&hilit=cv+joint

Re: PInzgauer compatible u joints?
On the other hand, the stock U joints are very dependable if they are greased as intended - I've had no problems with the U joints and shafts of either of my trucks, and I've had these trucks for a combined total of 27 years and roughly 80,000 miles. Sure, the joints may not be so easy to come by or as inexpensive as old Detroit iron but if done right and maintained you will probably never have to worry about them again.

Re: PInzgauer compatible u joints?
Yes, if I was having any luck getting the correct size I'd go that route for sure. No luck with the SAV joints and Lobro has no distribution in North America that I can find. Pinzgauer Canada doesn't offer what I need so I'm a bit stuck. There are some very high quality North American brands that should do the trick is my thoughts.

Here is the skf catalogue. Starting at page 475 they list u-joints by specs.

Good luck.
