DREAMMING ON OVERDRIVE

Post by MACH »

I HAVE AN OLD HONE-O-DRIVE AUTONOMOUS OVERDRIVE UNIT. IT DOES NOT FIT BETEEWN THE GERABOX AND THE T-CASE .

http://hone-o-drive.com/shop/

BUT WHAT IF: I CUT THE “DISTANCE PIECE” IN TWO PARTS (NOW IS 260MM, ONE WOULD BE 200MM AND THE OTHER 160 MM) AND BUILD IT BACK THIS WAY: BACK DIFFERENTIAL – 200 MM DISTANCE PIECE – T CASE – 160 MM DISTANCE PIECE – CENTRAL TUBE.

I WOULD NEED TO CUT THE SHORT DRIVESHAFT BY 160 MM AND ADD 160 MM TO THE LONG DRIVESHAFT.

THIS WOULD GIVE ME AND EXTRA 160 MM (ABOUT 6 ¼ INCHES) TO FIT THE OVERDRIVE.

¿ COULD IT BE DONNE? , ¿OPINIONS?

Thanks in advance

A few of use have the TD Tranie which is OD in 5'th. I can tell you from 1'st
hand experience if you don't have the 2.7L EFI providing somewhat over 20%
additional Torque you will find yourself constantly hunting gears or more often
than not just finding OD won't cut it unless the wind is to your back or on level
to negative grade

Good pointers Dan!

Bikmakr's OD design uses CV joints. And to my prior message he has
the extra torque with the 2.7L EFI upgrade (not to mention his own pretty
spectacular intake manifold of his own design). The key points are this
is a tricky mod given the very tight space between the X-case and Tranie
and you need the power to drive it.

Not sure if the T-case could be moved back as described... will look next time I am out at my shop. Would be a fair amount of work I think.

Another crazy idea would be to put the Hone-o-drive unit inside of the spacer between the T-case and the rear differential - its about the right length (around 10 inches) and no flex couplers (u-joints or CVs) would be required there. I don't know how you would service it inside that casting - and - you couldn't use it in 4WD of course!

Wow, I like that Hone-O-Drive idea!

Only draw back is high cost of unit :)

To me, not having 4WD (or 6WD) in a Pinzgauer would also be a drawback. (Why else would you own one, just for looks? )

You drive on the highway in 4/6 wheel drive?

You could still use 4 or 6 wheel drive with the overdrive in the normal 1:1 position...

It seems like I would have to build a special space part or make the central tube longer ( and the axle )

Haf-e idea ---The space part looks short to fit the overdrive inside , I could make it longer and move the rear tires a little to the back . there are a few Pinz with longer wheelbase

I’ve run the TD transmission with both the 710 and 712 transfercase. Both with a factory 2.5l engine. The only time I felt the power wasn’t sufficient to for normal driving was when fully loaded in gradient conditions with the 710 t case.

With the 712 t case( in a 712), I found it to be the perfect compromise for on and off road use. However I have not tested the setup fully loaded in either conditions.
