Castrol GTX diesel engine oil for the gearbox?

My local VW agent advised me to use ordinary Castrol GTX 15W40 mineral engine oil for my gearbox. It does not contain active sulphur and has the same viscosity of SAE75W90 (API GL4) gear oil.

Bad idea, the ZF gearbox uses GL4 90wt, not a multi wieght.
Use Coastal brand 90wt from Autozone or you can use Redline MT90 if you must.
This is NOT A VW

I would have (if I had the choice!), but those products are not available in South Africa. I am limited to the "mainstream brands" such as Castrol, Shell, BP... the previous owner used CASTROL EP75W90, SAE75W90, API GL4 in the gearbox and CASTROL EPX SAE80W90, API GL5 in everything else. These products does however have a high active sulphur content and I am trying to avoid that for the sake of the syncro's. Any other suggestions?

Hi Jim,
I'm trying to locate this here in Wisconsin too. So far, no luck. Everything I've found is a multi-weight.
AutoZone tells me they do not carry a straight 90 Wt. Even their website does not list such:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalo ... e=Gear+Oil
I found Redline MT90 through Summit, but it is listed as a 75W90 on their site:
http://www.summitracing.com/search/bran ... hetic-Oil/
Even Shell lists only multi-weight, from what I can find:
http://www.shellusserver.com/Trucking/products.php
I looked at their EW, Heavy Duty, and S type gear lubes, no straight weight lubes.
Your thoughts?
Thanks much,
Paul Underwood

I am using Swepco 201 (80-90) in the transmission, so far I'm happy with it.
In the wheel drives I use Swepco 212 (80-140) and it has cut the noise a bit. No leaks that some synthetics may cause.
Check out Porsche sites, Swepco lubricants are very popular with the Porsche enthusiasts.

I've used Hypoid 80W 90 in the Haffy's for the last 34 years (and the Pinny for a little less time

) and as they say "if it aint broke, why fix it"

.... but our operating temperatures are a little different to what you guys have.
I use PENRITE oil (Not Pennzoil) which is popular here with a lot of vehicle "enthusiasts", but I don't know if it's sold in the US/Europe.

Use the Redline from summit, it is compatible and you will like the shift quality at all temps.

All I can get here at Wally world is MotorMaster 80-90 W
Will that do.
Wanted to change the tranny fluid tomorrow so I would like to know...all the shell stuff here is double the price....my gear oil was $105.00 for a 5 gallon pail.

I have purchased Coastal brand 90wt from Autozone before as well. Though the last time I went in there, I ended up having to go with a higher end synthetic they had because the Coastal brand 90wt now states on the bottle that it is GL4/GL5.

Won't the synthetic leak though?
Just want to be sure I don't wreck something...
