How many reverse gears?

Post by spandit »

Putting mine into reverse isn't always that easy but I found today, that I was shifting gear but it was still going backwards - is it possible to drive backwards in different gears or is my gearbox knackered?

That's what I thought but it seemed to be in different positions - didn't let it go fast enough to determine whether it was going different speeds

I can assure you there is only ONE reverse speed in the box.
The mainshaft has a pinion gear & hub on it dedicated for reverse speed. This is the only pinion arr' that does NOT have a synchro on it. By the virtue of the fact that it is on the same op' selector rod as 1st, the reverse mainshaft pinion is slid forward to engage with a fixed idler pinion meshing with the layshaft (countershaft).
This creates a reverse of the mainshaft output flange.
