Ok to say this is an EASY JOB...hmmm...maybe if your trade is mechanics.

I had a friend today help me and he is a heavy equipment mechanic and an auto mechanic and a millright a welder and machinist.

He is from Slovakia and he has TONS OF EXPERIENCE. We were working in a shop with a hoist...transmission lift...impact YOU NAME IT.

Firstly I don't think I have the REAL "HOW TO" BOOK on pinzgauer maintenance (have to see about that one)...the book I have is pretty skinny on DETAILS...but having said that it's parts and they have to be removed and put back together in some kinda logical order.

I will preface all of this by saying that I learned lots///had fun///scraped nuckles and sweated lots (very hot here today and I am NOT COMPLAINING) and the COLD BEER WAS GOOD TOO 8) .

So after we got it all apart the clutch didn't need replacing  , but I know what I have now anyway and I have a spare if need be.

So where to start.

Well he gave me the easy stuff :) ..so I got in the back seat of the pinz and took out the rugs etc.

1 - I took of the doghouse/cover inside the rear section of the K. EASY SCREWDRIVERS...YES MY TRADE  .

2 - I loosened the shifter at the top (not sure if it was the transfer case HI LO or the gear shifter, but I could get at it easy from up there.

3 - I took off three bolts of the 6 bolts on the drive shaft from the rear of the transfer case (just easier for me up there).

4 - Then I loosened and removed the bolts that hold on the bell housing.

So we get all the bolts off and hooked to the hoist and try to get it out...NO MEAN FEAT this is....she won't budge...so we pry it off...but still no go...hmmmm.

My buddy figures the STARTER is hanging it up....dunno but I will take it off. This SHOULD BE AN EASY TASK RIGHT TWO FRIGGIN NUTS...piece of cake right..hmm.

SO TELL ME YOU DON"T NEED TO REMOVE THE STARTER JUST SO I CAN LAUGH ABOUT IT OK....probably didn't need to but we did anyway.

BUT TRY TO GET TO THEM.

take the seats - engine cover - take off the air filter/breather.

Ok now I can get at the nuts. You can't - well I couldn't get to the one on top...of course he gets his off in a jiffy and asking me what is taking me.

I tried everything and even got a socket with a swivel on it and then it got stuck in there. The lip on the starter won't allow a socket in there...well not one we had....So I work at trying to get the socket outta there.....sweat pouring now....then I look and think.

If I could remove the part that the clutch pedal activated the fork with out of the way this would be easier....So I remove it....no problem..dropped the nuts on my buddy but I got them off

Now I still have to try to get the socket off the nut that is jammed on the top of the starter nut....finally I get it off.

then I try to back the starter out of the flywheel AND YOU CAN'T....the oil dipstick tube is in the way and it hits it.....Now he really thinks I am sleeping up there..."HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET ONE NUT OFF" he says.

He was real patient with me BTW. I explained so he had to have a look..so up the ladder he comes cause the truck is 5 feet off the floor...hmm he says....well get at "er I am having a beer while you work hahahaha.

So I remove the two nuts that hold it in place and we free up the starter....

Down I go to help with the bell housing and the tranny...we have to wiggle it out and we finally get her out.

He pulls the pressure plate and the clutch plate and says we just wasted our time...he was worried about the flywheel but it was fine too.

So we decided to put the new parts in anyway and so I was in the back of the shop cleaning parts.

Image

I cleaned the bell housing and the flywheel...then the bearing that was shipped with the parts was too small on the outside diameter....so we take the bearing to "QUALITY BEARING" here in Whitehorse and the bearing they gave us was very POOR QUALITY...so much for that BUSINESS NAME.

I tried to clean the old bearing and regrease it but it was not up to my buddies standards so we greased up the new bearing and put her in.

Here's a pic of pulling the old bearing...LOTS OF TOOLS NEEDED FOR THIS JOB THOUGH.

Image

So we put in the new bearing and then get the clutch alignment tool...the one they sent was too small for the new bearing...but they had lots in the shop tool room (wow it's nice to have that handy).

I cleaned the throw out bearing and the fork and then lightly greased all the parts and we got ready to put her back together.

Get the flywheel on and then the job of trying to line up the shaft going into place....well I had left it in neutral so we got it into gear which helped and we struggled to get her in...but eventually we got he up and two bolts to hold her in place

MORE BEER (only two so far thats ok).

So back to the task of putting all the parts back.

I AM GOING TO INVENT A NUT STARTING TOOL...I think I would be RICH. I got the starter lined up no problem....nut on and it seemed forever trying to tighten it...no real place to work a wrench so it's fiddly.

then it comes to the part that slides over the little dick that comes off the fork....well it fell off when we were trying to get the bell housing on so I decided to put it on afterwards...that was fun..but I got it.

Then trying to get the nuts and washers on the part....you guys are AMAZING is all I can say....you guys work with this sorta thing all the time and DON'T LOSE IT....wow...I must have dropped the one on the closest bolt 4 times.....trying to get my left hand in the right positon to start it turning without losing the washer too..NUTS.

So I finally got it on...tightened her all up...bolted the oil diptstick tube in place and put all the rest of the parts back.....we got the cover in the back on afte making sure everything was torqued down.

TEST DRIVE.....well do I have a clutch now.....I used to have to bring it about 1.5 inches off the floor to get it to grab and there was about 2 inches of play at the top (when you push it down)...Now 3/4" from the bottom...

So is this ok..he said it was...and I don't know how to adjust it if it's not ok.

Hope I didn't bore you all...some of you are probably laughing your faces off at me, but that's ok...I am learning and having fun....just green at this is all...but always willing to learn.

I ALSO NEED NEW (ok I am really tired but they are the swivels...sorry I can't remember the name right now) for the driveshaft   ....are they easy to get or are the pinz specific?

So I have new brakes - rebuilt carbs - new clutch and pressure plate...have some leaks to fix and a good tune up and a FUEL TANK TO REPLACE.

Should be good for awhile I think.

I always look foward to your posts Jerry, the story was hilarious and I loved seeing the pictures. Whats nice for you is that you have gained so much valuable knowledge doing that job in a controlled environment, with a guy that knows his way around machinery. I was a mechanic at one point in my life, and although I am not a Pinz specialist by any stretch...to me...its all NUTS AND BOLTS...I learn as I go and find the shortcuts by looking, then doing...and once in a while bustin some knuckles! and like you I ease the pain with a few laughs and a few beers!
life is like a box of chocolates...you never know which one you might get
