Driving down the hwy at 60ish mph and had to get on the brakes really hard to stop. Well after a few seconds of "wow glad i had the emergency" went to start off and it would barely move but would roll down hill just fine. You could feel it trying to go but best i could get was 2-5 mph in any gear. Then the heavy rain started and i called a tow truck for a tow to the cabin. Next day still heavy rain and had had to leave to go back home. (in my turbo diesel vw pick up aka the cabin truck;) Saw some fluid dripping strait across from the battery box on the passenger side. Any thoughts?
blew a seal?
clutch issue?
? Thanks all! will be going back up this weekend.

Re: hard on the brakes then..... wouldn't pull
Battery box is on driver's side on my 710... Are you sure it wasn't rainwater?
Was the engine running OK and was it easy to change gear? Was it pulling to one side?
I'd make sure the handbrake is not on

Robin, I think it's an M model. But what about water in the bed running down past the tranny access cover?
Otherwise, pretty much straight across from the battery box is the transmission.
Was it oil, or was it water?
Rospaw,
What's the engine sounding like when you're only going 5mph? Is it working hard, like going up a steep hill? Or just revving high? If I understood your post, the truck rolls downhill (I assume either in neutral or with the clutch depressed), which leads me to think that the e-brake is not the culprit.
If it's some catastrophic failure, you'll likely find it when you look for the fluid's source. But if everything is shifting, feeling, and sounding normal, my first guess would be clutch-related. I'd think other failures would either sound/feel strange, or else not move the truck at all.

Straight across from the battery box on mine is the fuel tank. Lack of fuel will slow it down - check the lines (without a cigarette in your mouth!)

Robin,
Oh yeah, I forgot that one!! But you'd figure the notoriously accurate fuel gauge would have indicated that. Those never fail, right?
C'mon Rospaw, get back up to that cabin and solve the mystery. We're dying for an update.

Ok guys some more info (but i still will not see the truck until this weekend) It had not rained until after the truck was on a rollback going down the road. So water would not be the problem.
The fluid i saw the next morning was oil base. It was coming from BETWEEN THE BATTERY BOX AND THE FUEL TANK BUT CLOSER TO THE FUEL TANK. and 2+2=4

I agree with the clutch is most likely but didn't know if a blown seal in tranny ect would cause something like this.undysworld wrote:Robin, I think it's an M model. But what about water in the bed running down past the tranny access cover?
Never thought about oil can in the back cargo area getting crushed and leaking on the clutch or???

Sound normal!
Is it working hard, like going up a steep hill?
no sounded like the clutch was slipping but no "clutch smell"
Or just revving high?
Yes it will bare move but the move you rev the more it tries to move and does move faster with more revs!

Yes rolls fine so i do not think its a brake issue.

Re: hard on the brakes then..... wouldn't pull
EP90 has a very distinctive "cat urine" smell
Engine oil is normally black, unless you've changed it recently
Brake/clutch fluid is clear yellow and feels "waxy" - it can burn skin or remove paintwork
If the latter, is it dripping from the bellhousing drain hole? If so, clutch slave cylinder is the problem. If it's EP90 then oil from the gearbox might have contaminated the clutch causing it to slip - this sounds quite feasible.
