bleeding with a power bleeder

It seems to me that if you are using a power bleeder, that is, one that puts positive pressure on the reservoir, you should NOT depress the actuator, be it pedal or lever. In fact it seems to me that if you actuate one of the locker levers you are actually isolating that line from the pressure on the reservoir and defeating the purpose of using the power bleeder.
When the levers (pedals) are in neutral the lines are open to the reservoir, that is how the reservoir keeps the lines topped off. When you actuate a lever (or pedal) the line is isolated from the reservoir and pressurized. That is why when doing the 2 person bleed you close the bleeder plug before allowing the pedal (lever) to return to neutral
Am I wrong ?
