For me, a WARN XD9000 was the right choice. Fits right. Easy to install, and strong enough to pull Paraguay out of South America.

12v models are more common and often less expensive than a 24v winch. The Chinese harbor freight 12v models are cheap, I've seen it written on the internet that some people use the 12v units hooked to 24v, not something I would do for many reasons.

Thanks for pointing out the problem. I got out the meter and tested the posts today. I was mislead. The 2 posts are not separate. Definitely a no go! Thought it seemed too good to be true.

From the other "winch thread":

Whatever anyone does, stay away from the $299 Chinese crap winches. Many have shorted right out of the box and never even turned one revolution. It's the last tool to get a cheap version of. Consider yours and others safety. (Superwinch is my personal favorite)

Yes, but think of the epic Pinzgauer image! Me, pulling toward Brazil and you pulling toward Argentina. WARN would probably select us for worldwide advertising.

Don't worry, Paraguay is safe.

(for the moment).

Consider yourself lucky. I know of an HF winch specifically that melted its plastic brush housings after one use.

If I recall correctly, the big winch test that Fourwheeler magazine did had a HF and "Kodiak" winch in it. They weren't able to list the test results on those because both broke or didn't work out of the box. Good ole Chinese quality control.

I think most (like computers) have major parts made in China but at least the better ones are American controlled and/or assembled/inspected.

Anyone wanting to roll the dice, 12000lb Badlands winch at harbour freight is on sale for $299 this week. I've actually seen it for less....which is something that scares me, since the last one I purchased (T-Maxx, 9000 lb.) was triple that price...... I don't have the experience to judge the HB product, but pricing that low tells me that quality control has to take a hit. As has been posted, some will get a good one, some won't. Not sure I want to find out when I'm stuck!

Our experience in Aust is that the basic construction of the cheap chinese winches is good enough but the quality control and lubricants are not.

The trick is that when you get one is to strip it down and reassemble - use proper brand name grease not the soap they have in them, tighten all fastenings with thread locker and put sealant on the joints. Controller boxes are not good so carry a spare brand name and change when the original fails - after that they are reliable and work well.

Had to google that one, informative write up on Wikipedia. Always knew it as white metal, but didn't understand why it was so weak.....now I do!

Thanks!

All of this is just so ridiculous. Stop trying to cheap out and just buy a 24V winch.
