My approach to that is to have an additional battery (BLF-1220AS 12V, 20Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate) for the 12V system, which is charged from the 24V system when the vehicle is on. That way I can:
- accommodate surges beyond what the converter/charger can drive
- have 12V reserve power if the downconverter fails
- run 12V accessories that want quiet power automatically when the vehicle is off

This system has worked quite well for me.

I always avoided having a second battery, because I am old school and think of batteries as large clunky 12v car batteries. I never considered a lithium battery, would be way smaller.

Yep, I'm with you on that. I'd not have gone this approach with a lead-acid battery. The Li makes this nicely possible. Plus, it solves the issue of being able to have a very low electrical noise environment for radios when you need it.

Plus, one could always use it, jury-rigged, to (individually) boost flat main batteries if someone left the master switch on and discharged the 24V pack.
