Weird ignition system?

I am systematically upgrading my 1972 710M. Currently, I am busy with the ignition system (12V civilian conversion tapped from one battery), but I was hoping that somebody could identify this system more accurately and maybe comment on the suitability relative to a 24V Pertronix kit from EI. Whould it be worthwhile to install such kit?

Possibly an aftermarket system for a VW?
Stock means no imagination!
