Will this spring tool work with Pinz?

Saw these spring compression tools at Sears ($39) and wondered if they'd be a good fit for the Pinz springs. Anybody have experience with these?

I haven't seen these before, but on visual it doesn't look like the
top Jaw will clear into the top cavity or reach deep enough. Jim L.
has a template for making a clone of the Pinz extractors, I'd go
that route.

While they might, maybe, possibly do the job, you are probably just as likely to discover whether the afterlife is for real or need to have an emergency spring-ectomy performed on your head.

Regardless of whether it actually fits or not, it's an entirely different tool. Get the original, or another one built equally stout.

Not for the front springs. Those take a special tool, don't try to improvise.

I and others own either a factory tool or a robust homemade one. Many folks will loan you one, provided you'll pay the shipping. Some guys may charge rent, some don't.

I'd assume that will hold true in your area. I thought perhaps SWPA loaned tools, but I may well be mistaken. If so, it's a good reason to belong to that group.

Let us know if you're needing to borrow one, if you don't buy one.

Thanks Paul. I don't even need one at this time, but I'm sure the time will come. I might hit Jim up about that template. I have the means to fab up my own from plans as long as I know it will be stout enough

Yeah I did a search a little while back and there are some good photos of Jim's tool and some relavent info needed like the length the compressor needs to compress to to remove the springs etc. I wouldn't say that what I found were "plans" or a template as such but definitely good enough pics to easily recreate what others have made. IIRC all you'll need is a gas axe or plasma cutter, drill and relavent bits and a welder. Sorry I don't have the link to the thread but I'm pretty sure I just searched spring compressor, should be easy to find.

Ok, for reference I found 2 threads with decent photos.

These guys sell Acme threaded rod and nuts, which are the type of screw you need for a puller. http://www.surpluscenter.com/shop.axd/S ... words=acme
Make up some tool-steel hooks to grab the top of the spring.
My puller has 1/2" thick plate for the bottom, with a notch to fit around the bottom spring mount.
IIRC, the manual gives the minimum compressed length that it is safe to draw it down to, without damaging the spring.

Use hardened all thread rod, not the cheap stuff at the hardware store.
