My front brakes began to squeal the other day. When I removed the drums to inspect them, I found a very faint groove in the passenger side drum. About the same feel as a hair on the drum. The pads were fine. Is there an acceptable amount of grooving, or does any amount require a trip to the machine shop for turning? If there is an acceptable amount, what is the maximum allowable depth?
Thanks,

John,
When in doubt, assume that not everyone can be wrong, so you must be right! Don't feel bad just because nobody answered this earlier. Speaking personally, I assumed others more wise than I would put in their opinions.
I don't have my manuals in front of me, but I vaguely remember somewhere seeing the specs in them. A "hair" groove doesn't sound that bad to me. But, any local brake shop could likely look it over for you and give you a more professional opinion. I believe the manual's specs covered maximum I.D. of the drums in the event of turning them on a lathe.
Sorry I can't be more specific.

Re: Brake Drum Groove
I am trying to find the drum specs on the site, and this is the closest my search has come.
I need to have my drums turned and I was asked what the allowable tolerances were for the drums, is there a thread that has this info?
If not what I would really appreciate the information?

Please add your location to your profile. Have you no manuals? Here are the numbers you need.
