My speedo is inop. Looking for suggestions / recommendations please.
I started looking into why mine doesn't work - found the inner cable broken. Installed a new cable and it turns with the front diff as it should. However, the speedo gives very erratic readings. I removed the speedo and turned the input by hand - even turning it very slowly the speedo gives crazy readings. Considering going to the electric route by SAV -- has anyone put one of these in their Pinz? Any issues? I'm assuming it's a 12 volt input and while I'm very capable of wiring that up, I would rather keep it as much 24 volt as I can. I found a good looking GPS speedo for just over $200 but it's 12 volt (including the back lighting) and it's not waterproof (this could be an issue without the door upper half on). Sure I can continue without a working speedo but I'd like to have it working.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: Speedometer suggestions needed
I've installed at least 3 of the VDO electronic units from SAV and all have worked fine. I currently have them in both my 710's, one since 2007. They are 12V but come with a resistor installed to work on 24V and the included bulb for backlighting is 24V too. Takes an hour at most to install.
Original mechanical speedometers are also available if you prefer.

Thanks for the reply Paul! I'm leaning towards the SAV unit. May spring for the oil temp gauge & sending unit as well.

I second that and had luck with a few of them as well. Although I'd love to try this next time if i ever get that 716 I want.

That shows you how things change. I had done 4 , all pre'06, and the speedos used to be 12v and 24v. Just a matter of pin connections used on the back of the speedo.pcolette wrote:I've installed at least 3 of the VDO electronic units from SAV and all have worked fine. And, FYI. The 710/12 , the 716/18, and the Haflinger all use a different diameter speedo

I put the SAV speedo on. Easy to install and easy to calibrate. Works great.
Re: Speedometer suggestions needed
update from last October: the SAV speedo continues to work just fine!

Gentlemen, it looks like the crown gear in my diff is not working. Am I correct that the SAV speedo will work with out it? Thanks!
