I thought about square tube but there was a possibility of debris accumulating there so the 'C' channel was the obvious choice. I did the replacement at a time when I had no welder to cap the ends of tube.
Also thought about replacing the rail with the wood but it was a constant replacement situation and I preferred a lasting thing.
I have my original window rails for the front sliders if you know of anyone that wants to get them to replace rusted rails. I had replaced mine with rails that were a bit higher to capture more runoff water.
