My Top is leaking!

Post by ScottSVogel »

Now that the wet weather is upon us (even in Northern Calif), my top is leaking and starting to rip by the support bars. I've brought it to a number of auto upholstery shops, but while they can do the work, they don't have any patching materials that comes even close to matching.
That said, does anyone have any materials from a previously used top that they would be willing to part with/sell?
Or does anyone else have ideas on how to properly patch my original 710 top?
Thanks for your feedback - Scott

Where in NorCal are you? If your close to San Jose try Costa's Custom Covers.
Mike can pretty much fix and make anything with heavy fabric.

He did my Pinz Burberry style rain coat :P

Yes it's wet and more coming tomorrow.

I have a Tuff River Stuff top coming and will have my 710M desert tan stock top available for sale shortly. The cords are a bit stretched and it could use a good cleaning, but is otherwise in excellent shape. No tears or rips. If you're interested PM me an email address and I'll send some pictures of it.

Look for a surplus Swiss Army rucksack. I forget the years or model, but they're made out of the same material.

I want to see that! My Filson looks similar to Pinz material, but isn't exact.

In retrospect, I'm not sure my wife wants me to dress like the truck though...

If anyone has tips on patching, I'm very interested. I'm getting lots of water in the back and need it stopped. Exact match isn't a huge concern. Thanks in advance!

I've used this http://store.oldgrouch.biz/mipareadrima.html
military-parachute-repair-adhesive-ripstop-material-3.gif.jpeg
and this http://store.oldgrouch.biz/10pamifipafo.html for repairs on other tops, seats, etc.

Haven't used them on the Pinz top though but it should do the trick and the price is right.

I have the same issue described in this thread, leaking top by the support bars. I have an extra sacrificial top I can use to make patches, but I'm wondering what epoxy I should use to secure the patches and create the seals. Any suggestions?

I've seen the Tear-aid product, but seems it's more for tears than use as an epoxy.

For small tears in waterproof fabrics I use Tenacious Tape in clear. It’s virtually invisible once applied and survives Search and Rescue use
