Steering wheel removal

Post by mm58 »

I'm having one helluva time removing the steering wheel on my 710K. I could swear I've had it off at least once in the past, but this time it just won't budge.
I've been using dead blow hammers, 2 and 3 jaw pullers and penetrating oil, all to no avail.
I'm wondering if the application of some heat might help(?)
Other than the main center nut under the horn button, is there anything else holding it on?

It is only the main center nut that holds it on.
Here's how I've been successful:
-Loosen the nut a few turns but do not remove it (those of us with a dent in our foreheads can tell you why)
-While grasping the steering wheel at 3 and 9, rise up like you're almost standing and while pulling on the wheel rock it from side to side
-Turn the wheel 90 degrees and repeat the pulling and rocking
-If still stuck, try hitting with a large rubber mallet where the 3 spokes attach to the center from underneath
-Then try pulling and rocking again.
It often takes a while but I've never had to use a puller.
Good Luck!
