Conversion of back door to single
Conversion of back door to single
Folks,
What is the process for converting the split wagon doors to a single swing around door so that one can mount a tire on it? What does it involve and what will it cost?

I don't quite understand the question as all rear doors carry the tyres .... and the complete rear doors as found on the "K versions" are actually the same "bottoms" as found on the "M models" with a seperate top section added / bolted on.

I'd put the spare tire on the roof and keep the splitgate. I have found over the years that the single rear door/latch mechanism is a weak spot on Pinzgauers. Especially when you have a heavy full sized spare on there. I have had to beef up the whole rear door assemblies and they still feel pretty weak and flexy!
That's my two cents.

I have talked to people with the Rapier trucks and seen pics of the doors. Though I haven't seen them personally, what I expect was done was the original door and the 2 rear side rail pieces were removed and the 'flag' shaped doors were hinged off the side rails ( possibly with some extra bracing). This is an extremely weak fabrication, as the lack of the structural strength of those rear side rails to stabilize the the side rails and rear rollbar. It should be a fairly simple task to reverse the process... just expensive, as with anything Pinz
Some may appreciate this note for the evolution on the TDs.
The solution at the factory on the 716/18s was to use folding side rails facilitate the loading and unloading of paletized materials ( gotta love forklifts
). The STANDARD rear door and tire mount setup was done with a "hinged" rear tire mount assembly(structurally reinforced to the body), and the rear door was then bolted to the tire mount ( imagine a swing away rear tire mount and gerry can holder used by many on Jeeps and other 4x4s, then bolting the door to it). The UK TDs typically have a fold down tailgate, and the spare tire is mounted againt the cargo bulkhead at the front. Most all the TD 'M's then have a diagonial support from the rear rollbar to the top of the rear rails to had protection to the rear rollbar in case of a rollover.

Someone else has already chimmed in but, if I had a split rear door model, I'd go with a roof mounted spare. Thilo, Scott and I'm sure others sell them and they use the original antenna mounting point.

Thanks Timothy I understand now.
Like Dave, I have seen pics of this door arrangement, but never seen them in the flesh so to speak.
I get the impression from the pics and discussion that these doors were not a factory fitting, but rather an aftermarket modification for the military...Does anybody know for sure?

Another solution with additional advantages is to install this type of rear bumper with swing-away tire mount and provision for two 5 gallon fuel/water containers and jack storage. I installed this one, fabricated from our friends in SW Pinzgauers, and it is very well made, and ties into side rails for a great protection package. Check out:

Peresh, you have a few options.
buy and install the factory original panels and door (pricy).
Fabricate something from scratch. Or have it fabricated.

Modify what you already have. Cut on the red line, weld on the blue line. Bolt and hinge. Reinforce the whole mess. Mount tire.
Jim L may be able to take care of any of that if you ask nice? Jim?
those SW Pinzgauers guys have some nice setups and good ideas.

I have the part where the license plate goes and a rear door. If interested PM me....
I won't guarantee that it will fit since I don't know the configuration of your pinz from factory.
You will have to find the right part where the door latch mounts....
No rust I sand blast them and paint them, may be a little banged that's all...

Rapier rear door conversion
I just bought a 712 rapier with the "barn doors". Great for loading cargo and plywood. More of a hassel for the soccer team to get in and out.
Jim L (Goatwerks) is converting it to a standard single rear door for me. He says is a simple bolt on conversion- I bought the replacement single door replacement from Scott at Expedition Imports.
Now I have two pristine rapier doors for sale.....anyone interested?
