Re: Spare Tire Mount
It looks like the skin-tight tire cover wont work with it so the stock lock is fine. Thanks.

I thought it was cool too but then Ed posted a shot of his oil stored under the passenger floor board - bingo!Profpinz wrote:Interesting thread, but I really like this for the spare tyre mount.
It was discussed on this thread some time ago........Pity the cans are so expensive.

Re: Spare Tire Mount
That is really a nice looking compartment for the spare tire. I'm not ready for it just yet but I'm really liking it.

Re: Spare Tire Mount
Andre's secure storage is the way to go - can hold bottles of oil, straps, chains, shackles, camping fuel, garbage, anything you want.
With that flexibility it is the way to go, for me!

Re: Spare Tire Mount
I'm hoping to get my recovery gear to fit in there, inside a nylon bag. I'm not sure it will fit with a 30ft strap, tree strap and snatch block, etc. though.
If not, oil and some spares will go instead.
It would also be ideal if you are out on a trail and want to stop to take a hike away from the truck. You could throw small valuables in there, esp. if its covered.

If you recoil your strap so the inside is the void then everything should fit inside of the strapVinceAtReal4x4s wrote:I'm hoping to get my recovery gear to fit in there, inside a nylon bag. I'm not sure it will fit with a 30ft strap, tree strap and snatch block, etc. though.

Re: Spare Tire Mount
That looks like a trunk in the shape of a spare tire but no tire to be found.
Re: Spare Tire Mount
Sad - Its just like all of the new cars that they sell without spare tires - just a compressor and a bottle of slime...
it would be different if that was a well stocked scotch bar...

Re: Spare Tire Mount
It is
........ althought I thought their might be "emergency" spare or a VERY low profile tyre inside.

Re: Spare Tire Mount
Here's a shot of Andre's convetional spare tire mount to "face out" the wheel. Another nice piece from Andre!

Re: Spare Tire Mount
Finally got my new storage lid all sorted out!
Andre had this one custom cut for the G's 15" wheel. The alloy G wheel doesn't have a hard edge to hook the turnbuckles to so I got three longer ones and hooked them to the center tube which has some holes in it already.
I also replaced the lock with a barrel type that has a black finish. (just try picking that one)
I struggled a lot with what to put on the outside. It finally hit me to move away from the Merc. star and give some credit to the actual builders.
I'm thinking of not putting the tire cover back on so now all I need to do is have a tire shop reverse the tire so the ugly letters aren't showing.
I was able to fit:
30ft US Cargo recovery strap (US made-highly recommend) http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Towing-Au ... -Eyes-3x20
My Tree-saver loop
A Warn 20,000 snatch block
Back-up winch remote (in case the wireless fails)
Heavy metal shackle
And one Bubba Rope soft shackle. (32,000lb breaking strength!)
