Removable steering wheel?

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

Removable steering wheel?

Post by audiocontr »

I'm playing around with the new pinz. Previous owners installed aftermarket seats with high side support. Pain to get in and out with the wheel right there. Girlfriend loves the seats though, so is there a way to add quick release steering wheels to the pinz?

Looked into it at one time. I thought it would also serve as a great anti theft device. I could not come up with an adapter that had the same splines as the pinz steering column. I looked into getting a hub made also wanted it to fit my custom steering wheel. The options that kept coming up were to have a generic hub silver soldered to the column, then any removable steering wheel would work. I did not like the permanent nature of this mod so I dropped it.
something like these are what I found to be the most economical http://www.stockcarproducts.com/steer10.htm

what I ended up doing was to add a 17" wheel with a 2" dish on a custom hub

Hmmm. That's disappointing but not impossible. I worry about the steering effort required by a smaller wheel.

Do you happen to know the pinzgauer spline count and diameter? Is it a relatively standard size or a truly unique?

The steering wheel I chose for my rework is the same size as the original with the exception of having a larger outside ring diameter.

I don't recall the spline count but it was not a normal US size. I checked a bunch of the foreign sizes but most were really small diameter. I don't think it is an abnormal spline just not one that the manufacturers have chose to make a hub for. Seems it might be in a utility vehicle application not in one that gets these kinds of mods.

I did look into getting some of the hubs made. Even went so far as to get a steering wheel and a section of the steering column so I could let them have it so there would be no confusion about the sizes. I did not find anyone willing to take on the project in such small numbers. I am sure they are out there especially given the economic times.

just have to find the right surgeon :P some do really nice enhancements to your girlfriend for a price.

One of my thoughts was to take the steering shaft out, cut off the splines and have a more common spline welded in its place. Not all that difficult of a task. The only concern is making sure the shaft is still straight. Too bad we can not find a way to put a saginaw steering column in.

Interesting idea.

Do you still have the pieces that you used as examples? Wonder if making a new steering column with Spline X on one end and common spline on the other would be cheaper?

if I could find someone willing to do splines I would just have them make the hub. Seems most wanted around 500 units  Just too big of an order for my needs.

I measured the spline at 36 splines, 20.5mm diameter (13/16"). A cursory Google search brings up things like this that could be welded:

Hmmmm, now that would make it easy. Wonder if the pre 1977 gm splines really work

How would one merge this with a quick release?

Firstly, that's twice the price of the eBay ones I found!

I believe they'd have to be welded on
