I don't drive my Pinz a lot....but every time I do I wonder how much better it would drive with new tires.

I'm still running the original Maloyas that came on the pinz. I was given the option to put on radials when I bought it from T-Los, but I chose not to.... did I choose poorly? How much better will it ride with new tires? Is it worth it if you don't drive it all the time?

the maloyas have to be the worst tire chose for non military use, even if they are new. Of course any bias ply tire is going to be rough but the open lug of the maloya tire is very bad. Any radial tire will be such an improvement on the blacktop that you will wonder why oh why did you wait so long to change. At the very least a set of radial take-offs from a local tire shop would be a great improvement.

I had four brand new maloyas on my 712 when I bought it. I picked up new Trxxs Mt's and put them on widened rims for CWR at a considerable expense (according to the wife). When I put the tires on the truck we did not even get two houses down the block and she commented it was worth every penny. I could not give my maloyas away fast enough, almost paid to get rid of them.

When I replaced my Maloyas with radials, I noticed the improved ride backing out of the shop!! I kid you not. I cannot imagine any tire which would not outperform them ride-wise on-road.

The Trxxs Mt's are a great upgrade and are what I had last time. I am now running Micky Tompson Mud terrain tires and love them as well.
My Haflinger still has the Maloyas on it. I have a NOS set of Maloyas for it as well. Once I find a set of alternate rims I will mount the Maloyas on the factory rims just for shows.

not to get too far off topic but the rims Mark used for his Haffy were take offs from the UTV world. He had adapters made and now the rims and tire selection are endless Not a great photo but it is all I have showing his wheels/rims.

Oh and on topic, I also switched to the Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ's. they are just more readily available here. I am on my 7th set on my 712, the last set was on Mickey Thompson (I love warranties)

Like many have already said, swapping out the stock Maloyas with modern radials is the single best thing that you can do to improve your Pinzgauer. I couldn't even give my used Maloyas away.

While the ride is better with modern tires, the handling is what I was the most surprised about -- makes a Pinz feel like a sports car in comparison to the Maloyas.

OK - looks like I'll have to find some tires and make the change.

When I bought my truck, it came with BFG A/T 285/75R16 tires. While great tires (I run them on my Silverado), they were too tall for my garage. Since I didn't want to air down all the time just to park the truck, I went with recommendations here and bought size 265/75R16 tires. I went with Goodyear Wrangler Territory's because they are inexpensive here and worked well on my Iltis. If memory serves, the consensus was that the 265's are closest to stock.

at least 20+ threads on tire size
here is the basic list
for stock look (narrow and size): 235/85R16
for close to stock: 265/75R16
for taller and no clearance issues: 255/85R16
and max size advisable on stock rims: 285/75R16

Check www.treadwright.com. I have these on both my trucks for 1 and 2 years, respectively, many thousands of miles on each, and have had no complaints. In my book they are the best value by far.

I fitted 255/85/R16 BFG Mud Terrains which I like very much (on and off road) but that taller sidewall makes the lateral tipping angle noticeably lower. I think the taller tires accentuate the 'cutting under' feature of the downhill side suspension too (like the Corvair!), making that feature even worse.

Big tyres look great but if I was doing it again I'd go for 75 profile, not 85.

I run 265/75/16 BF Goodrich mud terrains on my 710 and 712 and 285/75/16s on my 716. I think they are the best compromise tyre.

Which size or do you mean The BFG's?

Radials are much better than the Maloyas as everyone says. Convinced yet?
