Intake and exhaust manifold

Post by Cole Wilson »

I recently came accross an intake manifold off of a 164 fuel injected. I was wondering if any one had done a conversion with this manifold over to a down draft conventional style carb. I have not seen what the exhaust manifold looks like. The intake appears to be adaptable. Thanks Cole

re exhaust manifold.

We adapted the exhaust manifold to the Volvo c303 when we built one with the efi from the 164. The flange is TOTALY different. In our case we cut off the last few inches of the pipesbefore the flange on both exhasuts and welded the c303 style flange on the 164 header.
We only did so becasue the efi conversion required the different manifolds.

My question for you is WHY would you want to do that? What carb will fit? If I recall correctly, the throttle body base that was on the manifold looked Propriatary (nothing else would fit).

For that kind of work, I would go the 164 fuel injection. IT CAME TO LIFE. The problem I had afterwards was the silly thing kept wanting to make the mechanical speedo go past the 0 mark at speed. Again a lot of work , but that might be worth it if you have the donor car (engine, harness, and computer). If you get so inclined, email and I'll try to put together a list of what we did. The engine work is the challenging part as parts from both engines are mixed after machining. The electrical was relatively easy (one of my specialties is electrical). That is if adding another complete set of circuits and a computer is your cup of tea.

Cole,
I have the same 146E intake manifold as well as the matching exhaust manifold. My plan was to use these as a basis for LPG conversion. I converted my 1963 Unimog 404 firetruck to run on LPG only. Now, I plan to convert my TGB11 to dual fuel using the original manifold and carbs.

Jim,
Will the exhaust manifold fit inside of the compartment. I was wanting to make an adapter for the intake and put a little Holley 390 on it, but I do not know what the exhaust manifold looks like.

Cole,
The 164E intake and exhaust manifolds both fit inside the engine compartment of the C303. You will need to do some custom exhaust work to get it all to mate with the standard mufflers but it will go.
