Full hydraulic steering

Post by wrangler_tj »

Does anyone has full hydraulic steering on his Volvo?
Not power steering with the electric power steering from Opel/Vauxhall,
I don't believe in this option.

I'am looking for it and has this kit in mind:

I only need to mount a power pump on the engine and a overflow bottle.
I searching one from a Volvo 164 that will bolt directly on the B30 motor.

Have you made any progress on the hydraolic steering?

Why is electronic steering not an option for you? I understand early designs gave limited driver response however with electronic steering now becoming the OEM choice for many manufactures. The driving experience has improved greatly.

One of the down sides of hydraolic steering and the main reason for the shift in production mentioned above is that the power pump on average sucks 1MPG from the fuel economy. (Ouch!)

Isn't full hydraulic steering illegal for road use? I thought the regulations required a mechanical connection, which doesn't exist in the hydraulic systems.
It's fine for competition trucks which are not road registered.

This should help answer that question. It's state by state.

I'm going full hydro with Howe they have great products and advice I talk to Jeff Howe who is the owner and I'm really glad I did. His product is a bit more expensive but he has great knowledge and a bad installation on a hydro is a nightmare. I will post some pictures of my build has we go along it will be in a month or so. Here is some ideas of what I will be doing and how my skid plate will lookImageImageImage

Here's my update on the steering for my portal boxes

I finally went with PSC has they were willing yo work with us. The problem is that there's only 4 inches from side to side and that most rams are 6 to 8 inches. PSC has put stoppers inside the ram at 4 inches. I will be getting the truck back soon and will post.

Have you been satisfied with the performance of the PSC power steering now that you've had it on your vehicle for awhile ?
